Dash Roll Past Red Sox With 8-3 Decision

Winston-Salem, NC - Anthony Carter provided a solid start and three home runs supplied the power as Winston-Salem breezed past Salem 8-3 on Wednesday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. Carter (7-4) worked an efficient six innings and limited the Red Sox to two runs (one earned) on four hits. He also recorded five strikeouts and did not walk a batter to garner his seventh win of the season.

Consecutive errors by Red Sox shortstop Yamaico Navarro helped the Dash take a 1-0 lead in the first inning. With one out, shortstop Greg Paiml and first baseman Jimmy Gallagher hit ground balls that Navarro misplayed which put runners on the corners. Third baseman Brent Morel followed with a run scoring single which also served as his team-leading 46th RBI of the season.

A Winston-Salem defensive mistake allowed Salem to even the score at one in the top of the second inning. Anthony Rizzo drilled a double into the right field corner that was misplayed by Salvador Sanchez. The error allowed Rizzo to reach third base and eventually score on Tim Federowicz's sacrifice fly. Sanchez made amends at the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning when he blasted a solo home run off Bryan Price to put the Dash back in front at 2-1.

Winston-Salem broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth inning when they sent nine batters to the plate and produced five runs. Paiml started the run parade when he doubled home second baseman Dale Mollenhauer, who led off the inning with a bunt single. Gallagher followed with a single and an error by right fielder Jason Place allowed Paiml to cross the plate. One out later, designated hitter Seth Loman lined a two-run home run off Price to give Winston-Salem a 6-1 lead. Following the round-tripper, Price was pulled in favor of reliever Kyle Fernandez. Sanchez greeted the new hurler with a double and catcher Logan Johnson tallied a two-out RBI single to push Winston-Salem advantage to six.

Che-Hsuan Lin hit a solo home run off in the top of the sixth and Chih-Hsien Chiang tallied an RBI double in the seventh to bring the Red Sox within four. Logan Johnson completed the home run hat trick for the Dash when he blasted a solo shot off Josh Papelbon to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning. It finalized the scoring and gave Winston-Salem two win in the first three games of the series.

Price only lasted 4.1 innings and surrendered six runs (five earned) on eight hits to suffer the loss.

The Dash and Red Sox conclude this four-game series on Thursday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. Winston-Salem will send LHP Justin Edwards (2-0, 4.50) to the mound, while Salem will counter with RHP Kyle Weiland (3-6, 4.11). The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
