Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Wilmington defeated Lynchburg 7-5 on Wednesday night at City Stadium. The Hillcats and Blue Rocks will meet in the rubber match of the three-game series on Thursday night at Calvin Falwell Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
Wilmington drew first blood with three runs in the top of the second. Lynchburg starter Bryan Morris gave up consecutive singles to Anthony Seratelli and Paulo Orlando to start the frame, with Seratelli advancing to third on Orlando's base hit. Jamar Walton followed with a walk to load the bases and Ryan Eigsti drove in Seratelli on an RBI groundout. Adrian Ortiz delivered an RBI single that plated Orlando and Walton scored the third run when Derrick Robinson hit into a force out that erased Ortiz at second.
Trailing 3-0, Lynchburg scored a run in the bottom of the second. Eric Fryer drew a one-out walk from Blue Rocks starter Alex Caldera. Jamie Romak followed with a single that put Cats on the corners. Kris Watts knocked in Fryer with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 3-1.
The Blue Rocks struck back with three more runs in the third. After Morris allowed a single to Clint Robinson and a walk to Seratelli, Walton socked a three-run home run over the right-field wall to extend Wilmington's lead to 6-1.
The Cats drew closer in the fourth when Fryer from second on a two-out single by Watts, which made it a 6-2 contest.
Lynchburg kept the pressure on Wilmington by adding a pair of runs in the fifth. Jose De Los Santos reached on an infield single with one out and promptly stole second base. De Los Santos advanced to third on a groundout by Chase d'Arnaud before scoring on Alex Presley's two-run home run, which reduced the deficit to 6-4.
An unearned run in the seventh allowed Lynchburg to cut the lead to 6-5. Jared Keel led off the inning with a single off Blue Rocks reliever Ray Liotta. Keel took second when De Los Santos reached on an error by Mike Moustakas. Following a sacrifice bunt from d'Arnaud, Presley drove in his third run of the night with an RBI single that scored Keel from third.
Wilmington tacked on a valuable insurance run in the top of the ninth. Moustakas reached on an error by De Los Santos and reached second on a wild pitch from Cats reliever Chris Cullen. Moustakas scored on Orlando's two-out RBI double, which gave Wilmington a 7-5 advantage.
Blue Rocks reliever Juan Abreu earned his 10th save with a scoreless ninth. Caldera (2-7) earned the win for Wilmington and Morris (2-3) took the loss.
Lynchburg and Wilmington will square off in the series finale at 7:05 p.m. Thursday.
