Potomac Nationals News Release

TODAY: The Potomac Nationals' "Bash at the Beach" against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans from BB&T Coastal Field continues Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. The P-Nats are winners of eight of their first 12 games since the All-Star Break and enter tonight's action 11 games over .500 for the first time this season. Their lead in the Northern Division remains at 2.5 over both Frederick and Lynchburg.

TODAYS OPPOSING STARTER: RHP Jacob Thompson, 22, was drafted in the 5th round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft by the Atlanta Braves out of the University of Virginia. Once thought of as as a potential first-round picked after a dominate 2007 campaign with the Cavaliers (11-0, 1.50, 101 striekouts), Thompson took a step backwards prior to the draft as he battled illness and a loss of command in 2008. He dropped 25 pounds in his final season with UV and slipped to the 5th round after being a unanimous FIrst-Team All-American, one of three finalists for the Roger Clemens Award and named to the US college national team in 2007. Thompson joined the Braves in August of last season and posted an ERA of 1.86 (1 ER/9.2 IP) in three appearances between Rookie ball and Low-A. In his limited action, Thompson was simply dominant against left-handed hitters after only allowing one hit in 15 at-bats.

Thompson has been terrific in his first go-around in the Carolina League winning his last two starts and enters tonight's contest having allowed just seven earned runs in his first 31.2 IP (1.99 ERA). He pitched 6.0 or more innings in four out of five games with the Pelicans and has yielded just one run in 14.0 IP since the All-Star Break. Lefties are still getting no love from Thompson who is holding left-handed swingers to just a .145 BAA (8-for-55, 1 2B, 1 HR).
