THE HILLCATS: Lynchburg edged Wilmington with a walk-off 3-2 win last night at City Stadium...The Hillcats have now won two in a row after suffering a season-long five-game losing streak...Tonight is the middle-game of this three-game series with Wilmington and game four of a five-game homestand at Calvin Falwell Field...This series ends a stretch of 14 out of 17 at home for the Cats...
VS. WILMINGTON: The Hillcats are 5-6 against the Blue Rocks this season and are 3-1 at City Stadium...They dropped three out of four in early June at Wilmington the last time they met...Last season the Rocks topped the Cats in the season series 11-9 and were 5-5 in the Hill City...Wilmington has the all-time advantage over Lynchburg 168-121 and they are 79-63 in Lynchburg...
COMEBACK CATS PART DEUX: After winning 23 games in come from behind fashion in the first half, Lynchburg has overcome a deficit in all four of their wins in the second half...They trailed by two runs half way through their win on Saturday night, before rallying with six runs in their next two team at-bats...Last night they trailed in the sixth inning before tying the game in the bottom of the frame and winning the contest with a run in the bottom of the ninth...It was the fifth walk-off win this season for the Hillcats, their second against Wilmington and their first of the second half...It was also the 11th time this year they have won with their final team plate appearance...
IN A PINCH: C Kris Watts gave the Hillcats a walk-off win with a pinch-hit double to plate the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning last night...It was just the third time this season Lynchburg has used a pinch-hitter and the first time for Watts...The other two occasions were earlier in the game and were not for strategic purposes...Last night was the first time manager P.J. Forbes went to his bench all season looking for a big hit...
BLUE CREW BASHING: Last night OF Jamie Romak picked up right where he left off against Wilmington with a 3-for-5 performance against the Blue Rocks...Over the course of three season with Lynchburg he is batting .352 (45-for-128) with 16 doubles, a triple, seven home runs, 21 RBI, 23 runs and 17 walks in 35 games versus the Rocks...
HILL CITY BLUES: RHP Juan Abreu for Wilmington took the loss in Lynchburg's 3-2 walk-off win last night...Both of his losses this season have come at City Stadium this season and both were in walk-off fashion...3B Pedro Alvarez hit the only home run thus far this season against the right-hander on May 15th to give the Hillcats 6-4 victory in 10 innings...Last night he allowed his first hit to a right-handed batter and allowed three hits in the ninth inning after he had allowed just four hit all season long (17 and 2/3 innings)...
LEGGIN' âEM OUT: INF Jose De Los Santos went 3-for-4 last night with a triple and a run scored...Two of his three hits last night were on the infield...Since June 1st he is batting .171 (19-for-110) and 12 of his 19 hits have been on the infield...Prior to last night he was 3-for-33 in his last nine games, and all three hits were infield hits...
HIT OR MISS: INF Chase d'Arnaud went 2-for-3 on last night with a pair of walks...In the last five games he has gone a combined 11-for-19 (.579) with the five doubles, a triple, five RBI and four runs scored...He is now batting .326 (14-for-43) with six doubles, two triples, eight RBI and seven runs scored in his 11 games with the Green & Gold...The former fourth rounder also committed his fifth error in his last four games last night...After committing just four errors in his first 57 games in the field this season, d'Arnaud has committed eight errors in his last 12 games he has played defensively...In his defense, he made two of those miscues playing second base, a position he has never played before...
HOT HAGUE: 1B Matt Hague went 1-for-5 on last night to extend his season-long hitting streak to ten games...Over that time he has gone a combined 18-for-38 (.474) with three doubles, a home run, seven RBI and two runs scored...He has hit in 15 of his last 16 games and has gone 23-for-56 (.411) over that time, raising his average from .278 to .309...He has four extra-base hits in his last seven games after he had two in his previous 20 games...His .309 average ranks fourth in the Carolina League...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Alex Caldera was drafted in the 13th round of the 2007 draft by the Royals out of the University of California-Irvine...He made his debut at the Rookie League level that year with the Burlington Royals and went 1-2 with a 3.40 ERA and two saves in 12 games (seven starts)...He advanced to Low-A with the Burlington Bees and posted a 12-6 record with a 2.90 ERA in 25 starts...Caldera began this season with Wilmington and has gone 1-7 with a 6.59 earned run average in 15 starts...He has made two starts against the Hillcats this season and has gone 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA...His loss to Lynchburg on June 6th was the first of five straight losses in his last five outings...
