WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Dash starter Kade McClure tossed five shutout innings, but Winston-Salem managed just two hits against Woodpeckers pitching, as Fayetteville claimed a 3-1 victory on Friday night at BB&T Ballpark.
Making his sixth start in a Dash (6-10, 44-36) uniform, McClure racked up six strikeouts and allowed just six hits and one walk across five innings of work. Prior to Friday's start, McClure was recently named the White Sox Minor League Pitcher of the Month for June.
Fayetteville (8-8, 39-46) got to Dash reliever Tyler Johnson (0-1) in the top of the sixth. To lead off the frame, Jonathan Arauz reached on an error by first baseman Jameson Fisher. The next batter, Jeremy Pena, ripped a double off the glove of center fielder Steele Walker to put runners at second and third. Scott Manea then smacked a two-run single into left field to give the Woodpeckers a 2-0 lead.
The Dash cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth against Woodpeckers starter Jojanse Torres (2-0). Tate Blackman drew a walk before Tyler Frost grounded into a fielder's choice to replace Blackman at first.
With Mitch Roman at the plate, Frost stole second. Walker then bounced a ball under the glove of third baseman Jonathan Arauz, allowing Frost to score to make it 2-1. Otherwise, Torres was fantastic, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out seven against three walks.
The Woodpeckers added insurance in the top of ninth against Will Kincanon. To start off the inning, Ross Adolph and Scott Manea hit back-to-back singles. Ruben Castro then laid down a sacrifice bunt to put both runners in scoring position. With Michael Papierski at the plate, Kincanon threw a wild pitch that allowed Adolph to score the final run of the contest.
In relief of Torres, Cesar Rosado and Jacob Billingsley combined to keep the Dash off the board in the final three innings.
