Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Winston-Salem, NC - The middle of the Dash order provided most of the offense for Winston-Salem, who defeated Kinston 7-6 on Saturday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park to extend their season-high winning streak to seven games. The first-place Dash also pushed their lead in the Southern Division to five games over second-place Salem and knocked the Indians 6.5 games out of first.
Batting two through four in the Dash lineup, Greg Paiml, Jimmy Gallagher and Lee Cruz combined to go 7-for-12 with a double, home run and six RBI to power a Winston-Salem attack that registered 12 hits in the contest.
Kinston struck first with a run off Dash starting pitcher Charlie Shirek in the top of the third inning. Alex Castillo led off with a single and moved to second on a ground out. Tim Fedroff reached on a single back to the mound, which put runners on the corners. Cord Phelps followed with a run-scoring double to put the K-Tribe in front.
The Dash knotted the score in the bottom of the frame when Paiml launched a solo home run off Kinston starter Ryan Morris. The round-tripper extended Paiml's hitting streak to a season-high 12 games.
Winston-Salem jumped in front in the bottom of the fifth when left fielder Kent Gerst walked and second baseman Dale Mollenhauer reached on an error to start the inning. Paiml advanced the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Next, first baseman Jimmy Gallagher and designated hitter Lee Cruz connected on back-to-back RBI singles to give the Dash a 3-1 lead.
Kinston answered right back with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning as Matt Brown and Lucas Montero reached on singles and Alex Castillo lined a two-run double off Shirek to even the score at three.
Center fielder Salvador Sanchez ignited a four-run seventh inning when he smacked a solo home run to hand the lead back to Winston-Salem. Latter in the side, Paiml added a two-run double and Gallagher followed with a run-scoring single to extend the Dash advantage to 7-3. The K-Tribe would not go down quietly as they utilized a two-run double from Matt Brown and an RBI ground out by Ronald Rivas in the top of the seventh inning to get within a run at 7-6.
That would be as close as the K-Tribe would get as Dash reliever Wander Perez retired the final four batters in order to collect his first save of the season. Henry Mabee (4-1) allowed three runs on three hits in an inning out of the bullpen for Winston-Salem, but picked up the win.
Shirek, the league-leader with eight wins, lasted 5.1 innings and allowed three runs as he scattered eight hits, but did not figure in the decision. Morris (3-6) allowed six runs (three earned) on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work to suffer the loss for Kinston.
The Dash will look to sweep the K-Tribe as they conclude this four-game series on Sunday evening at Wake Forest Baseball Park. The Dash will send RHP Jacob Rasner (1-0, 3.38) to the mound, while the K-Tribe will counter with RHP Bryce Stowell (0-1, 5.40). The first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Sunday's games at Wake Forest Baseball Park will be part of Domino's Family Fun Weekend. This special offer includes 4 tickets, 4 souvenir Dash caps, 2 medium Dominos pizzas, an order of cinna-stix and a 2-liter of Coke for just $40.
