Birds take game one while Nats take the night cap

WOODBRIDGE, VA - The Pelicans took game one seven to six but it was the Nationals prevailing in game two with a 5-3 win as the two teams split the fist of back-to-back doubleheader at Pfitzner Stadium.

The Pelicans got on the board in early thanks to Cody Johnson's 18th home run of the season, a solo shot to right field which put the Birds up 1-0 in the second inning of game one. The Nationals answered in the bottom of the third when Chris Marrero doubled home Francisco Plasencia who walked the batter before.

Myrtle Beach answered with a three-run fourth inning Freddie Freeman was hit by a pitch to begin the inning and was followed by consecutive singles from Donell Linares and Cody Johnson. All three would score in the inning, Freeman on Johnson's single and Linares and Johnson on a Chad Lundahl base hit which made it 4-1.

With the Pelicans leading 4-2, the Birds plated three more runs in the seventh, which proved valuable, as the Nationals scored four in the bottom of the seventh off Pelican reliever Tommy Palica to pull within one. Michael Mehlich (1) recorded the final out to earn the save and secure the Pelicans win. Starter Erik Cordier didn't record a decision as he went three and one-third innings allowing just one run on four hits. Lee Hyde (2-0) got the win in relief, he went one and one-third innings allowing a run on a hit walking two and striking out two. Nationals starter Will Atwood (1-5) took the losing allowing four runs on seven hits over six innings.

In game two, Myrtle Beach again struck first with a two-run second inning. Jon Mark Owings singled to begin the inning followed by a Michael Fisher double. Benji Johnson then reached on a throwing error that scored Owings from third and allowed Fisher to score from second.

The Nationals responed in the bottom of the inning getting a solo home run from Michael Burgess and a two-run homer by Tim Pahuta to put the P-Nats up 3-2.

The Pelicans tied it in the top of the fifth when C.J. Lee, who tripled with one out, scored on sacrifice fly by Freeman. The Pelicans surrendered the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Marrero hit a leadoff single off Jose Ortegano then scored when Stephen King doubled him home off Michael Broadway. The Nats added another run to take the 5-3 win.

The two teams matchup in another doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1:05 at Pfitzner Stadium before returning home on Tuesday for a 7:05 start at BB&T Coastal Field in Myrtle Beach.
