Salem Sweeps Double-Header

June 6, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release

The Frederick Keys dropped their fourth and fifth games in a row Friday night, as the Salem Red Sox swept a double-header. The Sox won game one 5-1, and game two 5-0.

The double-header was originally scheduled to begin at 5:00, but was delayed for nearly three hours. The first pitch of game one was thrown at 7:59 PM, and the final out of game two was made at 1:46 AM.

Game one was scoreless until the top of the third. With two on and two out, Salem 1B Mike jones drilled a three-run homerun off of Frederick starting RHP Tim Bascom, giving the Red Sox a 3-0 lead.

Frederick got on the scoreboard in the fourth. SS Pedro Florimon led the inning off with a double. He advanced to third on a LF Kraig Binick single, and scored on a passed ball.

That's all the Keys would get. Salem manufactured an insurance run in the sixth. They scored their fifth and final run of the game in the seventh, when 3B Zach Borowiak hit a solo homer, his first of the season.

RHP Eammon Portice got the win. He allowed just one unearned run over five innings, while striking out seven. He improved to 3-3. Bascom took the loss, dropping to 4-5. RHP Robert Coello pitched two scoreless innings to pick up his first save of the year.

Game two was a pitcher's duel between two 2008 first round draft picks. Salem RHP Casey Kelly, in just his second Carolina League start, threw six perfect innings. Unfortunately for the Red Sox, he was on an inning count and would not come back out to pitch the seventh.

LHP Brian Matusz was very good as well. He held the Red Sox scoreless through the first six innings. The southpaw came back out to pitch the seventh, but found himself in trouble. C Luis Exposito singled and CF Che-Hsuan Lin worked a walk to lead off the frame. RHP Luis Lebron came into the game for Matusz. The Keys closer struck out three of the next four batters he faced to get out of the jam without allowing a run.

LHP Derrick Loops came into the game in the seventh. With one man out, SS Pedro Florimon broke up the perfect game with a double to left. He advanced to third on a fly ball out to right, but was stranded there.

The game stayed scoreless until the top of the tenth. The Sox were able to mount a two-out rally against Keys RHP Cliff Flagello. Salem scored five runs on five hits. The big blow was a three-run triple off the bat of 1B Will Vazquez.

Loop got the win, improving to 2-3. Flagello took the loss, dropping to 1-1.

Matusz went six shutout innings, allowing just five hits and one walk. He struck out six. Matusz has not allowed a run in his past 23.1 innings pitched.

The Keys and Red Sox will meet in game three of this four-game set Saturday evening at Harry Grove Stadium. It's FredNeck night at the ballpark. The first 1,000 fans in attendence will receive a Blaine Young bobblehead. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM. A super fireworks show will follow the game.
