Indians Notes for June 6
June 6, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Kinston Indians News Release
Kinston Indians (23-31) at Winston-Salem Dash (28-25)
Game 55 - June 6th, 2009 - 7:00 PM
O Offense, where art thou? - The K-Tribe has lost six of its last seven games in large part due to the disappearance of its offense. Kinston has scored just 14 runs its last seven games and have averaged just six hits a game during that stretch.
High RISP, low reward - K-Tribe hitters are just 5-38 (.132) with runners in scoring position over the team's last seven games (1-6). On the season, Kinston is batting just .268 with runners in scoring position.
Streakin' no more - Lucas Montero's 24-game road on-base streak dating back to last August came to an end last night after going 0-3 in game two. Montero had hit .368 over the streak, with 32 hits, 13 walks, 19 runs and 10 RBI. The streak lasted for 20 games this season, and is still the longest of the year.
Southern Supremacy - Kinston is back in the Dash city just four days after dropping two of three from Southern Division leading Winston-Salem. With just 15 games remaining in the first half, the Indians are now 5.5 games back of the Dash. Kinston has now lost four straight to the Dash and is 5-7 against them this year, even though Kinston is hitting .262 with a 3.93 ERA against Winston-Salem, while the Dash is hitting just .239 vs. the K-Tribe.
Don't Cut This Cord - Cord Phelps leads Carolina League second basemen with a .996 fielding percentage, committing just one error in 229 total chances this season. Phelps also leads the Carolina League with 39 walks, tied for fifth most in Minor League Baseball this season. Cord is second in the CL in obp at .422 and tied for third in doubles with 15.
May Sorrows - On May 9th the K-Tribe had just won a season high four straight games and stood atop the Carolina League Southern Division by two games with a 17-13 record. Then the K-Tribe suffered through a season high eight game losing streak. Stung a bit by the call-up of Matt McBride and the injuries to starting outfielders Tim Fedroff and Roman Pena, the K-Tribe had a lack of clutch hitting. Five of Kinston's last six losses in the streak were by one run with the other loss coming by two runs in extra innings. The K-Tribe finished the month of May with an 11-17 record, tied with Myrtle Beach for the worst record in the month. The Indians hit just .257 and posted a 4.23 ERA in the month. Lonnie Chisenhall had a breakout May, however, hitting .330 for the month. Northern Exposure - The K-Tribe is just 10-19 this season against Northern Division clubs, with four of the nine wins coming against Lynchburg, the team with the most wins in the Carolina League. Kinston finished a stretch of six of seven series against Northern Division teams, going a combined 5-13. Kinston is 13-10 against the Southern Division this season, boasting a .500 or better record against every other team in the south. Road Warriors - After playing 18 of their first 21 games of the season at home in Kinston, the K-Tribe is in the middle of playing 16 of 19 and 23 of the final 29 games of the first half on the road. The K-Tribe is hitting .291 on the road this season, compared to just a .256 at home. Kinston starts a seven-game road trip today, before returning home for the final time in the first half June 12-14.
