Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Winston-Salem Dash walked off against the Hickory Crawdads in game two of a six-game homestand 4-3, scoring three runs in the ninth to upend their intrastate rival.
Righty Davis Martin (4-1) pitched a five-inning gem, punching out a season-high ten batters, allowing two runs on three hits. Southpaw Cole Ragans (0-0) fared well in his start for Hickory (8-12), fanning five batters, allowing one run on two hits in five innings.
The 'Dads opened the scoring in the second inning, as Kellen Strahm continued to impress with a two-run bomb over the bridge in the right field corner to put Hickory on the board.
Winston-Salem (10-10) answered in the fifth with a run of their own. Luis Mieses fashioned an extra-base hit on a double to right field. Mieses came around to score on a grounder to center from Duke Ellis, who tried for second on the throw home from right. A swift heave from catcher Scott Kapers arrived in time to tag Ellis and end the inning.
Jose Acosta singled and stole both second and third in the sixth, putting himself in position to score on a ground ball single to left from Strahm. The RBI base knock extended the Crawdads' lead to 3-1.
Grant Anderson entered the game in the ninth looking to secure a second straight victory for Hickory. Instead, Anderson was met with a leadoff grounder from Harvin Mendoza, who was pushed to second on a walk drawn by Henri Lartigue. Lartigue was replaced by pinch runner Travis Moniot.
With runners at first and second, Yolbert Sanchez stepped in and laid a bunt down the third base line, enticing a throw to third that took Franyier Chavez away from the bag. With the bases juiced, Lenyn Sosa blooped a single into shallow left-center field, tying the game at 3.
Grant Anderson intentionally walked Alex Destino to load the bases once more, inducing a strike out Luis Curbelo for the first out of the ninth. One pitch later, a wild pitch to Luis Mieses ran to the backstop, scoring Sanchez and handing the Dash a 4-3 walk-off victory.
Caleb Freeman(1-1) penned the victory for Winston-Salem. Anderson (0-2) took the loss for Hickory.
The two teams are at it Thursday night at Truist Stadium for game three of the six-game series. Righthander Jeremiah Burke (0-0) faces the lefty Cody Bradford (0-1).
