
Greenville Draws 12 Walks in 9-3 Triumph Over Rome

Rome, Ga. - The Drive walked 12 times and banged out nine hits while Brayan Bello spun 5.0 innings of one run ball to win game two, 9-3, Wednesday night at State Mutual Stadium.
Seven of the nine Greenville (9-3) starters collected hits, including multi-hit performances by Cam Cannon and Devlin Granberg, two knocks a piece. Tyreque Reed and Brandon Howlett each registered three RBI on the night. Reed stroked a two-run home run for his seventh of the year. Howlett roped a three-run double. Five Drive players drew two walks. However, they were just 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position.
On the bump, Brayan Bello earned his fourth win of the year in as many starts. He hurled 5.0 innings and surrendered one run on two hits and no walks with seven strikeouts. Oddanier Mosqueda, 1.2 innings, and Zach Bryant, 1.0 innings, both completed their turns on the rubber with no earned runs.
Ricky DeVito took the loss for Rome after he allowed four runs on six hits and three walk.
Greenville put immediate pressure on Rome in the first inning with three-straight singles. Cannon led off the frame with a single and advanced to second on a Christian Koss single to right. Tyler Esplin then connected on an RBI single. With runners on first and third, Esplin took off for second which allowed Koss to score from third on the double steal. The Drive led, 2-0.
The Braves cut into the Greenville lead in the second inning. Bryce Ball doubled to begin the inning and advanced to second on a groundball out at first. During the following at-bat, Ball came around to score on a Bello wild pitch to put the score at 2-1 in favor of the away team.
In the top of the third, however, the Drive extended their lead. Esplin walked to start the frame. A batter later, Reed obliterated an 0-2 pitch deep to left field for a two-run clout to give Greenville a 4-1 advantage. It was his seventh of the year.
The Drive put the game out of reach in the top of the sixth inning. Cannon got things started with a one-out infield single. The next three batters, Koss, Esplin and Reed walked. Reed's walked plated the first run of the frame. Howlett then followed that with a towering drive to left that one-hopped the wall for a three-run double for an 8-1 lead.
Rome added a run in the seventh on an RBI groundout by Ball.
In the top of the eighth, Greenville added four more walks to its tally. Granberg drew a one-out walk to plate their ninth run of the game.
The Braves added a third and final run in the bottom of the ninth frame after the first four batters reached. Ball drew a bases-loaded walk, bringing the score to 9-3.
Game three is set for 7:00 pm Thursday night. The Drive are scheduled to send right-hander Chase Shugart while Rome will throw right-hander Alan Rangel.
