Wilson Tobs News Release
KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (July 5, 2011) - The Wilson Tobs (16-16) set a season-high by issuing 12 walks, and the Outer Banks Daredevils (12-18) took full advantage en route to a 13-2 victory at the First Flight Baseball Complex on Tuesday night.
Tobs starter Tyler King (0-2) surrendered five of the free passes, which lead to eight runs for the Daredevils. King ended up getting the loss and being chased from the game in the fourth, when Outer Banks sent 11 men to the plate. The big hit in the inning came off the bat of catcher Chad Carman. With the bases loaded and one run already across the plate in the inning, Carman lifted a pitch from RHP Daniel Brown over the center field wall to clear the bases with the second grand slam hit against the Tobs this summer. Brown had come on in relief earlier in the frame for King, who left with the bases loaded and one out. King's final line was 3.1 innings pitched, eight runs (all earned) on five hits, five walks, and two strikeouts.
The five-run fourth inning was one of three frames where the Daredevils plated at least three. In the third the Daredevils added to their then 1-0 lead when SS Tyler Sciacca singled home CF Chris Reese, who had led off the frame with a walk. Third baseman Sean O'Hare also walked and was brought home from third on an RBI groundout by 2B Jordan Hankins. The Daredevils got their third run of the inning when Carman flied out to left, which allowed Sciacca to score from third and put Outer Banks ahead 4-0.
The Tobs broke an 18-inning scoreless streak in the top of the sixth when 3B Brandon Elliott delivered a double down the left field line to plate CF Ryan Mathews, who had reached on a throwing error by the shortstop. Right fielder Jeff Bouton followed up Elliott's double with a single that drove home Elliott from second, making it 9-2 at the end of 5 1/2.
Outer Banks got double those two runs back in the bottom of the sixth when they continued their offensive assault. Hankins delivered the big blow in the inning as he stroked a bases-clearing double to center field with the bases loaded and two outs, making it 13-2 Daredevils.
Earning the win for Outer Banks was LHP Richard Hawkins (2-1), who completed seven innings allowing two unearned runs on seven hits and three walks. Brown, Tyler Saltsman, and Garrett Davis were the pitchers who worked in relief for Wilson.
The Tobs stay on the road tomorrow as they head to Morehead City to take on the Marlins. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm. On the hill for Wilson will be RHP Craig Goodman (2-0), making his fifth start of the summer. The next Tobs home game will be Thursday, July 7. Since it is a Thirsty Thursday all domestic draft beers will be just $1.50, and all fountain drinks will be just $1.25. For tickets call the Tobs box office at 252-291-TOBS.
