Washington, D.C. (April 6, 2010) - D.C. United's U-16 Academy side gained invaluable experience on Friday, April 2, as the Black-and-Red lost a heartbreaker to West Ham United in the Tiffany Trophy Cup Final. The English Premier League youth side was sternly tested by United's ambitious players, as the match went all the way to penalty kicks to determine the winner.

After 90 minutes the score was deadlocked at 2-2, forcing the contest to progress to two ten-minute periods of extra time. United claimed a 3-2 advantage after the first extra period, but the Hammers came storming back in the final period of extra time to level the score. After nine rounds of penalty kicks, West Ham finally claimed victory as Jake Young converted his spot kick to win the prestigious trophy. The Hammers went undefeated in the tournament.

The Tiffany Trophy Cup is the largest crystal trophy made by Tiffany & Co., and it was displayed by 2009 champion Real Madrid CF Juvenil at the Santiago Bernabeu for the last calendar year. The trophy will now move to the Boleyn Ground in East London, home to West Ham United's youth teams.

For United, this elite competition provided wonderful experience for the U-16 Academy side. Prior to the West Ham defeat, United claimed a 3-3 draw against the Georgian U-17's, and a 2-1 win over Annandale United.

When asked about the club's performance in the Tiffany Trophy Cup final, United Technical Director Chad Ashton stated, "It was a well played game by both teams. The intensity that the West Ham side brought to the table was great for the progress of our Academy players and we relished the opportunity to face a club with such history and tradition."
