Czarnik, Francis and Harstad to Represent the U.S.

(Green Bay, WI) -) USA Hockey today announced the 22-player roster for the 2010 U.S. Junior Select Team that will compete at the World Junior A Challenge Nov. 8-14 in Penticton, B.C. Team USA is the two-time defending champion (2008, 2009) at the tournament.

Included on the roster is Gamblers defenseman Aaron Harstad and forwards Austin Czarnik and Robert Francis.

All of the players on the U.S. roster currently compete in the United States Hockey League, the nation's only Tier I junior hockey league.

Highlighting the U.S. squad are three players who were members of the 2010 U.S. Under-18 Select Team that competed at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in Piestany, Slovakia, and Breclav, Czech Republic, including forwards Seth Ambroz (New Prague, Minn./Omaha Lancers) and Cason Hohmann (Plymouth, Mich./Cedar Rapids RoughRiders) and defenseman Brian Cooper (Anchorage, Alaska/Fargo Force).

In addition, six Team USA members were selected in the 2010 National Hockey League Entry Draft, including Max Gaede (Woodbury, Minn./Sioux City Musketeers), who was chosen in the third round (88th overall) by the San Jose Sharks; Jimmy Mullin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Fargo Force), who was a fourth-round (118th overall) choice of the Tampa Bay Lightning; fifth-round selections Caleb Herbert (Bloomington, Minn./Sioux City Musketeers/Washington Capitals, 142nd overall) and Michael Parks (O'Fallon, Mo./Cedar Rapids RoughRiders/Philadelphia Flyers, 149th overall); and sixth-round selections Zane Gothberg (Thief River Falls, Minn./Fargo Force/Boston Bruins, 165th overall) and Nick Mattson (Chanhassen, Minn./Indiana Ice/Chicago Blackhawks, 180th overall).

Sharing the goaltending duties for Team USA will be Gothberg and Casey DeSmith (Rochester, N.H./Indiana Ice).

The U.S. Junior Select Team will first face off against Canada West in an exhibition game on Sat., Nov. 6, at 10:30 p.m. EST, before beginning tournament play against Canada East on Mon., Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. EST.

NOTES: The U.S. roster includes 13 forwards, seven defensemen and two goaltenders. The 22 players represent 10 states, with seven players hailing from Minnesota, four from Wisconsin, three from Missouri and two from Michigan. Nine USHL teams are represented, with the Fargo Force boasting five players and the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and Sioux City Musketeers each boasting four P.K. O'Handley, head coach and general manager of the USHL's Waterloo Black Hawks, will serve as head coach of the 2010 U.S. Junior Select Team, after having guided Team USA in its first World Junior A Challenge appearance in 2007. Luke Strand, head coach and general mangager of the USHL's Sioux City Musketeers, and Justin Lyle, associate head coach of the USHL's Indiana Ice, will serve as assistant coaches O'Handley, Strand and Lyle are all USA Hockey Level 4 certified coaches The World Junior A Challenge is in its fifth year and Team USA will be competing in the tournament for the fourth consecutive time The U.S. has won the championship the past two years (2008, 2009) and garnered a third-place finish in 2007 The 2010 World Junior A Challenge will include teams from Russia, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States and two teams from Canada (East and West).
