Brooklyn Cyclones News Release

Wilmington, DE - It took just one swing of the bat to turn the tide in Game One of today's doubleheader as Shervyen Newton's three run blast into the bullpen gave Brooklyn all the offense they would need in a 4-2 win over the Blue Rocks in the opener of today's double header.

RHP Junior Santos (3-5) was solid for 5.2 innings, scattering three hits and four walks but allowing just one run while striking out four. RHP Grant Hartwig tossed the final 1.1 innings, striking out three to collect the save.

Wilmington jump started their offense when Ricardo Mendez led off the bottom of the first with a double and advanced to third on a groundout before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Nick Banks and just 10 pitches into the game, the Blue Rocks led 1-0.

After their early run the teams traded zeroes until Brooklyn broke through in the top of the fifth. Jose Peroza singled to start the frame and Jaylen Palmer followed with a walk to put a pair of runners aboard with nobody out. Joe Suozzi had a long fly ball to advance the runners and then Shervyen Newton connected on an 1-0 pitch and sent it over the right field fence to give Brooklyn a 3-1 lead. It was his third home run with the Cyclones this season and his seventh overall.

In the top of the seventh, Matt Rudick - who was making his first start with Brooklyn since returning from the IL - tacked on an insurance with an RBI double that plated Jaylen Palmer and made it 4-1.

Wilmington had a two-out solo home run from Omar Meregildo in the bottom of the seventh that made it 4-2 but would get no closer as Hartwig slammed the door to close out the 4-2 Brooklyn win.
