Cyclones Recapture Third Place
March 22, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
Cincinnati, OH -- The Cincinnati Cyclones reclaimed sole possession of third place in the East Coast Hockey League's Northwest Division standings with a 3-2 win over the Lexington Men O' War on Saturday at U.S. Bank Arena.
The win also moved the Cyclones to within two points from officially clinching a playoff spot with one week left in the regular season.
Rookie goaltender Peter Hamerlik made his professional debut a memorable one with 26 saves. Hamerlik was assigned to the Cyclones earlier in the day from the Boston Bruins who selected the goaltender with their fifth choice in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
The Cyclones struck just 32 seconds into the game to set the pace. Joe Cardarelli notched his team-leading 31st goal of the season to make it a 1-0 game after one period.
In the second frame, the Cyclones got a goal from Steve Gallace at 12:47 of the frame to extend the lead to 2-0.
After Jason Norrie struck to make it 3-0, the Men O' War would score two goals just 35 seconds apart to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Cincinnati travels to Dayton on Sunday for a 6:00 PM match-up with their I-75 rivals.
