Brooklyn, NY - The Aberdeen IronBirds' struggles at MCU Park continued Friday night, as they fell to the Brooklyn Cyclones 11-1. This is the second season in a row the IronBirds have gone winless at Brooklyn.
Baltimore Orioles 2011 third-round pick Mike Wright got the start. He set down the first nine batters he faced in order before getting into trouble in the fourth. Danny Muno led off the frame with a double. Two batters later, Richard Lucas knocked him in with an RBI-single. Charley Thurber then doubled, scoring Lucas. Brian Harrison (1) blasted a two-run homer down the left field line to give Brooklyn a 4-0 lead.
Brooklyn poured it on in the fifth inning. Nelfi Zapata and Ismael Tijerina reached on back-to-back singles. They moved to second and third on a wild pitch. Muno knocked them in with a two-run single. After Cole Frenzel walked, Javier Rodriguez hit an RBI-double. With runners at second and third, reliever Matt Taylor threw a wild pitch that allowed Frenzel to score and Rodriguez to get to third. Lucas reached on a throwing error by third baseman Connor Narron. With runners on the corners, Thurber grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Rodriguez.
The IronBirds finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh. Mychal Givens tripled off the left-center field wall. He scored on a wild pitch.
The Cyclones got the run back in their half of the seventh. Muno reached on a double. He advanced to third and scored on back-to-back ground outs.
Brooklyn would tack on one more run in the eighth to make it an 11-1 final. Todd Weldon (3-0) got the win after pitching two perfect innings of relief. Wright (1-1) took the loss after surrendering seven runs (all earned) on seven hits in four innings of work. Tyson Seng (2) pitched the final three innings to pick up the save.
