Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Tonight's Match-up
The Aberdeen IronBirds fell last night to the Brooklyn Cyclones (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the New York Mets) 13-0. It was the worst loss since July 3rd, when the IronBirds lost to the Hudson Valley Renegades 15-1. A 2-0 game heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, Ryan Berry surrendered eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits in just 1.1 innings of work. The IronBirds, who had double-digit hit totals in their past six games, were held to no runs on just five hits. Aberdeen will try to right the ship tonight with right-hander Mike Wright on the hill. Wright, who was the Orioles third-round pick in the 2011 draft, is looking for his second win in as many starts. He'll go up against right-hander Randy Fontanez.
Hobgood's Heat
Matt Hobgood took the loss in last night's 13-0 beat-down at the hands of Brooklyn. Hobgood surrendered just two of the runs on seven hits in four innings of work. Hobgood's fastball sat between 90-91 MPH and topped out at 93 MPH. 11 of the 12 outs Hobgood recorded were ground-ball outs (seven ground outs, two ground ball double plays). The former first-round draft pick is battling back from a rotator cuff strain that was discovered during the off-season.
Pitching Woes
Despite the better play of late, the IronBirds pitching staff has continued to struggle. The club has a league-worst 5.02 ERA. The pitching staff has struggled in the month of July. Opposing batters have hit .298 against Aberdeen in July, and the team's ERA in the month is 5.62.
Glynn Racing Up the League Leaders
With a stolen base last night, Glynn Davis now ranks third in the New York-Penn League with 13 stolen bases. Keury De La Cruz (31 games) and Kyrell Hudson (28 games) are tied in first with 14 steals. Davis started the season in the Gulf Coast League. He has stolen 13 bases in just 21 games played.
College Aces
Tonight's pitching matchup between Wright and Fontanez pits two former college aces against each other. Wright posted a 6-4 record with a 2.79 ERA in 16 starts for ECU this past spring. Fontanez, pitching for the University of South Florida, went 5-6 with a 2.92 ERA in 2011.
