NORWICH, CT - The Connecticut Tigers had their three-game winning streak snapped on Friday night, as they fell 3-2 to the Tri-City ValleyCats at Dodd Stadium.
Wilsen Palacios delivered one of the best starts of the season for the Tigers, going eight strong innings and allowing three runs, all of which were unearned, on four hits. He tied a season-high with six strikeouts, but was the tough-luck loser. The ValleyCats scored all three of their runs on defensive miscues by the Connecticut defense.
The Tigers got on top early with a run in the second on a Javier Azcona RBI double and added a run in the third, as Chad Wright came in to score on a John Hinson error.
Jacke Healey led off the fifth inning for Tri-City with a base hit and after recording two outs Palacios walked Brandon Meredith to put runners on first and second. The next batter, Matt Duffy, then hit a fly ball to left field. Tigers newcomer and left fielder Tyler Collins came charging in and had the ball bounce off the heal of his glove, as both runners came racing around to score and tie the game at two.
Duffy hit a one-out double in the eighth, but Palacios induced a groundout from Hinson for the second out of the inning. However, Miles Hamblin came to the plate and hit a hard groundball to the first baseman Dean Green, who could not handle the ball cleanly. The error allowed Duffy to score from second and gave the ValleyCats a 3-2 lead that they would not relinquish.
Dayan Diaz tossed 3.1 innings of hitless relief out of the bullpen to pick up his third win of the season, while Palacios dropped to 2-2 on the year. Ryan Cole earned his fourth save of the season by retiring the side in order in the ninth.
The Tigers will begin a three-game series with the Williamsport Crosscutters tomorrow night at Dodd Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
