Brooklyn Cyclones News Release

Brooklyn, NY -The Brooklyn Cyclones (22-16) avenged a loss in the series opener by defeating the Connecticut Tigers (16-21) by a score of 2-1 on Western Night at MCU Park.

After both teams combined for 15 runs the previous night, it was a battle of wits between both pitching staffs.

In the top of the third, the Tigers jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a solo homerun to left by Eugenio Suarez off of Brooklyn starter Randy Fontanez. The former South Florida Bull provided 4.2 innings, also contributing five strikeouts in his third start of the season.

Richard Lucas, who entered the day ranked second in the NYPL with 29 runs scored, added to that total by hitting a solo homerun to left in the bottom of the fourth off of Tigers' starter Wilsen Palacios. Lucas has now reached based safely in 18 straight games dating back to July 7th.

The Cyclones had an earlier opportunity to score the go-ahead run but their chances were curtailed. In the bottom of the sixth, a two-out walk by Brian Harrison loaded the bases before the Tigers opted for a pitching change. Reliever Ryan Wooley replaced Wilsen Palacios and induced a strike out to end the threat.

Brooklyn had a chance for redemption and Travis Taijeron made sure that the opportunity would not be put to waste. In the bottom of the ninth, the San Diego native blasted a solo walk-off homerun on the first pitch he saw from Fernando Cellis (0-3) well over the wall in left-center much to the delight of the 7,101 fans in attendance.

T.J. Chism (3-0) earned the win in relief as the Cyclones bullpen had 4.1 innings of scoreless relief to continue their impressive run thus far. Since the start of the season, the group has inherited 51 runners and has allowed just five of them to score (9.8%).

Brooklyn will close out their three-game set with the Tigers tomorrow evening, 7 p.m., as Marco Camarena (1-3, 4.94) faces Brennan Smith (1-3, 2.48 ERA) in a battle of right-handers. It will be EMS Appreciation night with the first 3,000 fans in attendance receiving a Cyclones Performance Shirt courtesy of Midwood Ambulance. Fans will also get to enjoy the Coney Island Fireworks following the game. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling 718-507-TIXX, visiting the MCU Park box office, or logging on to BrooklynCyclones.com.
