Jamestown Jammers News Release
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. - The Jamestown Jammers grounded into three double plays, and Joe Velleggia delivered a three-run homer as the Aberdeen IronBirds prevailed, 5-1, at Diethrick Park Thursday night.
Jamestown had plenty of opportunities to score and take an early lead; however, the team could not ï¬Ând the big hit to get on the scoreboard. Auburn and Mahoning Valley also lost to keep the Jammers in a three-way tie for ï¬Ârst place in the Pinckney Division.
It looked like the purple and green would take an early lead with runners at ï¬Ârst and second with one out when Josh Adams roped one down the ï¬Ârst-base line, but Velleggia snared the liner with his glove then stepped on ï¬Ârst for the ï¬Ârst double play.
Another opportunity presented itself in the top of the second after Brian McConkey singled in his ï¬Ârst at bat as a Jammer, but Jobduan Morales bounced into yet another twin killing to end the threat.
That momentum swing carried into the top of the third. Glynn Davis doubled and Mychal Givens walked on four pitches to put two men on with two outs. After the walk, Velleggia belted the ï¬Ârst pitch he saw over the left ï¬Âeld fence to make it 3-0.
Aberdeen starting pitcher Mike Wright took over from there to earn the win. The third-round pick kept the Jammers off balance the entire night as he limited them to just four hits in six innings and beneï¬Âted from another double play in the ï¬Âfth to keep Jamestown scoreless.
The Ironbirds added two more runs in the top of the eighth inning thanks to a pair of fortuitous singles that took unusual hops. Jamestown also beneï¬Âted from a weird hop in the eighth as Austin Barnes skipped one past the third baseman for a RBI single to score Marquise Cooper after he doubled, but Aberdeen escaped again after Adams just hooked a liner foul that would've brought the tying run to the plate and grounded out instead.
Matthew Neil took the loss after going six innings, striking out seven and making just the one mistake to Velleggia. Offensively, Austin Barnes and Terrence Dayleg both had a pair of singles and Marquise Cooper contributed a double.
The Jammers will wear special Jamestown Falcon uniforms from the 1941 season to wrap up the series against the IronBirds at 7:05 p.m. Friday.
