February 13, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
ESTERO, Florida - The Cincinnati Cyclones claimed a 3-2 win at Florida on Friday night. A two assist performance from Mark Van Guilder and 34 saves from Ryan Nie paced the victory. The win leaves Cincinnati in first place in the North Division and pinned a loss on the Everblades, who have the ECHL's best record.
The first period finished knotted at 1-1, as each team scored special teams goals. The Cyclones opened the scoring at 1:42, as a shorthanded goal was scored by Matt Syroczynski netted his 13th score of the season. Mark Van Guilder stole a puck at the Florida blueline and broke in up the right wing side and fired a shot that Anton Khudobin made the save on. The rebound shot into the slot and Syroczynski scored. A Matheiu Roy powerplay goal at 8:44 tied the scores. The shots favored Florida, 12-9.
The Florida Everblades chew teams up in the second period, having scored an ECHL-high 84 goals in the frame and having allowed just 43 scores. But it was the Cyclones who won the period and used it as a springboard to the win.
The Cyclones grabbed the lead 13:54 into the second period when Ben Gordon snapped off his twelfth goal from the bottom of the left circle, beating Khudobin to the near side post. Van Guilder had the assist on the score. The shots favored Cincinnati, 8-6, in the frame.
Justin Johnson's tenth goal of the year at 13:40 would prove to be the game winner as he worked a two-on-one with Ben McLeod. A Mark Lee power play goal at 17:22 closed the deficit to 3-2 and that would be the final score. Florida outshot Cincinnati, 18-7, in the period and 36-24 for the game.
Ryan Nie improved his record to 10-1 as a Cyclone-turning aside 34 shots. Anton Khudobin stopped 21 shots in the loss.
Prior to the game, the Cyclones signed forward Bill Kinkel and defenseman Ryan Van Buskirk. The veterans live in the Fort Myers area and joined the club in time for tonight's game.
The Cyclones are now 28-18-5 on the season, while Florida is 34-13-2. The Cyclones play at Florida to close a three game set against the Everblades on Saturday night. The game will be carried on www.cycloneshockey.com with the pregame show at 7:15pm and the faceoff at 7:30pm.
