Charlotte Checkers News Release

Biloxi, Miss.- The Checkers have gone an extra session with the Sea Wolves five times this season and hadn't lost until tonight when it took a shootout by Mississippi to beat Charlotte 5-4.

The Sea Wolves struck short-handed for the first goal of the contest after a turnover on the Checkers blueline resulted in a breakaway for Jeremy Hall. Hall skated in on Charlotte goalie Maxime Daigneault and lifted a shot over the blocker-side of the netminder at 9:09. Charlotte tied the contest after Mike Bayrack streaked down the right wing, took a nice pass from Michel Leveille and flipped the puck over the glove of Sea Wolves goalie Ryan Munce at 18:01 locking the contest at 1-1. Checkers forward Brad Ralph gave his team the first lead of the contest on the power play when he grabbed the loose puck in the Sea Wolves zone and shot it past a sprawling Munce at 19:50.

Mississippi scored the next two goals of the second period. The first was tallied by Alexandre Parent at 1:10 after Daigneault had trouble holding onto a loose puck on the side of his crease, Parent snuck it inside the post and into the net tying the game at 2-2. Later, the Sea Wolves got a goal from Mathieu Melanson after he blasted in a rebound on a shot from Jeff Kyrzakos at 9:24. This gave the Sea Wolves a 3-2 advantage. It would take a power play goal from Julein Brouillette to tie the contest when his slap-shot beat Munce low blocker at 11:06. Charlotte retrieved their one goal lead on a Jeff Miles shot from the right wing after he tracked down a loose puck and rifled it between the legs of Munce at 14:17.

The only goal tallied in the third period was a big one for Mississippi as they tied the game on a Mike Berry redirect in front of Daigneault at 5:26.

Neither team was able to score a game winner in overtime so the game went to a shootout where the Sea Wolves came away victorious getting goals from Melanson, Cruthers and Parent while the Checkers only tallied goals from Miles and Hillier.

The Checkers are playing their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. The next home game takes place on Feb 17 against the Florida Everblades at 7 P.M. start. In the team's 15-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 11 times including four consecutive playoff appearances to date.
