Cyclones Drop Close One in the Shootout
December 1, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
Cincinnati, OH- The Cincinnati Cyclones (10-4-2-2) fell to the Quad City Mallards, 2-1 in the shootout, on Tuesday night. Forward Peter Quenneville tallied the lone goal for the Cyclones, who fall to 1-4 this season in games decided by overtime or a shootout.
After a scoreless opening period that saw Cincinnati get their fair share of quality scoring chances, the Cyclones continued to pepper Quad City netminder Brody Hoffman in the second. Despite the chances from the Cyclones, the Mallards drew first blood late in the second period, when a shot from forward Austin Coldwell beat Cincinnati goaltender Brad Thiessen on the power play, putting Quad City up, 1-0, after two periods.
The third period brought more action and offensive opportunities for the Cyclones, and their hard work paid off, as with just under seven minutes left, the Cyclones got on the board when forward Zach Budish sent a pass from the right side to Quenneville, who tucked it around Hoffman, tying the game, 1-1.
The Cyclones survived a late third period rush from the Mallards, including killing off a 5-on-3 penalty, and the two sides headed to overtime.
In the extra session, Cincinnati ramped up the offensive pressure, and had numerous chances to win it. Hoffman continued to stonewall the Cyclones, and both sides headed to a shootout.
In the skills competition, Mallards forward Sam Warning netted the lone goal, as forwards Andrew Yogan, Mike Hammond and Brandon Gracel each missed for Cincinnati, and Quad City went on to the 2-1 shootout win.
It was another solid performance from Thiessen who stopped 22 of the 23 shots he faced in the loss. Cincinnati outshot Quad City, 28-23 on the night, while the power play was held scoreless on all seven opportunities.
The Cyclones are back on the road next, as they head to Greenville to battle the Swamp Rabbits on Thursday night. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:00pm ET.
