December 7, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
CINCINNATI - The Cincinnati Cyclones got 38 saves from Dov Grumet-Morris to claim a 2-1 shootout win over Elmira Friday night and claim first place in the North Division with the triumph. The win was the fifth in a row for the Cyclones and the ninth in the last eleven for the club.
The first period ended scoreless and about as even statistically as can be played. Both teams had seven shots on goal and each had two power play chances-with none converted.
The Cyclones opened the scoring 2:08 into the second period with his third goal of the season. Martin, who set in the low slot, took a feed from behind the net from rookie Thomas Beauregard to beat Jackals netminder Joel Martin over the shoulder. Defenseman Jon Gleed added the second assist on the goal. Elmira outshot Cincinnati, 18-5, in the second period.
Elmira scored its lone goal of the third period, when Benoit Doucet added his fourth of the year at 10:16 to force the extra session.
In the overtime, Cincinnati survived a shorthanded situation for two of the five extra session minutes and forced the shootout. Grumet-Morris stopped all four shooters for Elmira, while Jean-Michel Daoust and David Desharnais had the scores in the fifth session.
Cyclones goaltender Dov Grumet-Morris improves to 9-2 on the season and has won seven straight decisions. Grumet-Morris has not lost since Nov. 4 at Dayton in a 3-2 defeat. He is tied with the Jackals Joel Martin for the league-lead.
With the triumph, the Cyclones have won five straight games, the first five game winning streak for the club since Nov. 29 through Dec. 7, 2003. During this stretch, the team has outscored the opposition, 17-6. The club has twice put together seven game winning streaks, the last coming in 1996-97. Cincinnati will have a chance to extend the winning streak on Saturday night when the teams meet again Saturday night at U.S. Bank Arena at 7:30pm.
The Cyclones improve to 15-5-1, leaders of the North Division. Elmira is 14-6-2 on the year. The Cyclones have their best 21-game record in team history, a full three games better than the 2002-03 edition of the club which advanced to the National Conference finals before being eliminated by Atlantic City, the eventual Kelly Cup champions.
Tickets for all Cyclones games can be purchased at the U.S. Bank Arena box office, all Ticketmaster outlets including select Kroger stores, charge by phone at 513-562-4949 or online at ticketmaster.com.
