Elmira Jackals News Release
Holding a 39-21 shots advantage meant little as the Elmira Jackals fell to the Cincinnati Cyclones 2-1 in a shootout Friday night before a crowd of 2,047 at U.S. Bank Arena. The win gave the Cyclones sole possession of first place in North Division by one point over the Jackals.
All five Elmira overtime games this season have gone on to a shootout with the Jackals posting a 4-2 mark. Friday's loss came after four consecutive shootout triumphs.
After blanking the Trenton Devils in the shootout 3-0 in Wednesday's 5-4 win at First Arena, the Jackals had the tables turned on them, blanked by the Cyclones 2-0 that gave them the extra point.
Pierre-Luc Faubert, Scott May, Frank Littlejohn and Benoit Doucet came up empty for Elmira while Jean-Michel Daoust and David Desharnais converted for the home team.
After a scoreless opening period in which the shots were tied at seven apiece, the Cyclones' Andrew Martin snapped a one-timer over the glove hand of Joel Martin (19 saves) 2:08 into the middle period on assists from Thomas Beauregard and Jon Gleed for a 1-0 lead.
Elmira pressured throughout the period with an 18-5 edge in shots, but could not penetrate Dov Grumet-Morris (38 saves) through forty minutes.
Benoit Doucet finally broke through for the Jackals with 9:46 left in regulation as he sent a backhander past Grumet-Morris for his fourth of the year and second goal in two games. He was set up Trevor Hendrikx and Chaz Johnson.
The Jackals finished regulation with 36 shots, but would never hold the lead in the contest that headed to overtime.
Early in overtime, Grumet-Morris made the save of the night when he stopped Kevin Ulanski's first shot. May picked up the rebound and had an open net looking at him from the bottom of the right circle as he fired the shot. From on his back, Grumet-Morris sent his left leg up and deflected away what looked to be the game-winner off of May's stick.
The Jackals then picked up a power play chance when Mathieu Aubin was whistled for tripping at 2:03 of the extra period, but were held at bay in going 0-for-7 overall with the man advantage as the contest needed the shootout to determine a winner.
The teams conclude their two-game weekend set Saturday night in Cincinnati in a 7:30 face-off. Game night coverage on MAGIC FM (92.7/97.7) begins at 7 p.m. with the Hill Top Inn Countdown to Face-Off.
