Charlotte Checkers News Release

Charlotte, N.C. - The Checkers battled the Johnstown Chiefs for the first time this season on Friday night and dropped a 4-2 decision.

It only took twenty seconds into the first period for the Chiefs to set the tone after Kenny Roche danced inside the Checkers end and flipped the puck over the blocker of Charlotte netminder, Matt Zaba. This gave the Chiefs an early 1-0 lead. Later, while the Chiefs sported a man-advantage, it was Jean Desrochers who was on the doorstep of the crease and banged home a nice pass from behind the net past Zaba extending the Johnstown lead to 2-0 at 9:52. It would be a former Charlotte Checker; Mike Falk who netted a goal late in the period at 19:44 after the Chiefs crashed the net and had a slew of bodies in front to impede Zaba from stopping the puck as it flew past him over the catching glove. The Chiefs would end the period with a 3-0 advantage.

In the second stanza, Checkers goaltender, Curtis Darling would replace Zaba and turn aside all 11 shots that came his way. The second ended as the first did with the Chiefs up 3-0.

Fourteen seconds into the final period, Jordan Owens directed a shot on goal and Mark Lee batted in the bobbling puck behind Chiefs goalie, Ryan Nie putting the Checkers on the board and cutting the Chiefs lead to 3-1. Johnstown would answer back at 17:27 when Ryan Garlock batted in his own rebound once again putting Charlotte down by three goals. Charlotte would get one more goal from Lee but it wasn't enough to close the gap and Charlotte would lose by a score of 4-2

Notes: The Checkers were out-shot 15-5 after the first twenty minutes...Checkers forward, Kaleb Betts would fight twice during the contest, first with Nicolas Bachand and later with Jason Spence...Falk would end the game as the number one star...Only Johnstown scored a power play goal during their six chances. The Checkers were scoreless in eight attempts including a 5-on-3 late in the third period.

The Checkers are in their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL. Their next home game takes place on Dec. 13 against the Gwinnett Gladiators. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three consecutive playoff appearances to date.
