New Haven County Cutters News Release
WEST HAVEN, CT - The New Haven County Cutters loaded the bases in the bottom of the thirteenth inning Tuesday night against the Grays with nobody out but failed to score and wound up losing the game 4-3 in 13 innings at Historic Yale Field.
The Cutters took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning thanks to a SS Chas Terni RBI double that scored LF Henri Stanley, and a 1B Chris Gaskin RBI single that scored Terni. But in the top of the eighth inning the Cutters gave it right back by allowing the Grays to score two runs.
The Cutters had a chance to win the game in the ninth with runners on first and second and nobody out, but Stanley was picked off at second and the Cutters failed to score.
Cutters newcomer Matt Salvato (0-1) pitched wonderfully in relief but ended up giving up the lead in the top of the thirteenth after four and two-thirds innings of work. He got the Grays one, two, three in the three out of the four innings he pitched.
Dustin Nielsen (5-2) who pitched a perfect twelfth inning for the Grays came back on in the thirteenth and started off the inning by hitting Cutters C Matt Hackney. 2B Matt Mercurio reached base on a throwing error by Grays catcher JB Tucker that pulled 1B Jose Velasquez off the bag, giving the Cutters runners at second and first and nobody out. CF Ervin Alcantara then reached on a similar throwing error by Nielsen that again pulled Velasquez off the bag to load the bases.
Enter Tony O'Donnell out of the bullpen for the Grays with the bases loaded and nobody out. O'Donnell promptly struck out Stanley, 3B Junior Zamora and then got Terni to ground out to short to end the game.
The Cutters will try to regroup and take the series from the Grays tomorrow night as Rolando Valles (4-4) takes the mound. He will be opposed by Elliott Shaw (5-7). Game time is set for 7:05 P.M.
