(Florence, KY) - Collins Cuthrell led the NCAA in home runs this past spring with 25.

The rookie out of UNC Pembroke is carrying that power over to his first pro season with the Florence Freedom (19-24), presented by Titan Mechanical Solutions, crushing two long balls and driving in four in Florence's 8-5 win over the River City Rascals (22-20) on Friday night.

Trailing 1-0 heading to the bottom of the third inning, Florence took their first lead of the game. Steve Carrillo doubled to lead off the frame and moved to third on a Daniel Fraga single. Cuthrell put a dent on the scoreboard, blasting a three-run home run over the left field fence. Florence led 3-1 after three innings.

Freedom starter Coleman Stephens (3-4) went six plus innings allowing five runs, four earned, while fanning three to earn his third win of the season.

Leading 3-2 heading to the bottom half of the fourth inning, Florence got two more runs. Sam Eberle led off with a walk. Ozzy Gonzalez doubled to put runners on second and third. Travis Weaver laced a single into left field that plated Eberle and Gonzalez. Florence lead 5-2 after four frames.

Florence tacked on two more runs in the fifth to take a 7-2 lead. Cuthrell lifted his second home run of the game to left field to lead off the inning. Andrew Godbold walked and moved to third on a Cody Bishop single. Godbold came into score on a double steal. Bishop was thrown out at second on the play but Godbold crossed home plate safely.

Florence got an insurance run in the seventh inning after River City tallied three unanswered to close to within two runs. Eberle singled and moved to second on a Gonzalez single. Weaver walked to load the bases. Steve Carrillo singled to bring home Eberle and extend the lead to 8-5.

The Florence bullpen sent out four different pitchers to shut the door. Austin Delmotte tossed two thirds of an inning and didn't allow a run. Pete Levitt got the final out of the seventh inning. Ethan Gibbons shut the door in the eighth, striking out two, and Ed Kohout tossed a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his sixth save of the season.

The Freedom return to action on Saturday night against the Rascals. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. with Tony Vocca taking the hill for Florence. Get your tickets here to watch the Freedom all season long.
