River City Rascals News Release
Normal, IL - The Rascals (22-19) dropped their fourth straight to the Normal CornBelters (25-17), losing 7-3 on Thursday, July 2 at the Corn Crib.
RHP Clint Wright (L, 0-2) started for the Rascals. He surrendered three runs, two earned, in the bottom of the first inning without recording an out. RHP Clay Smith then entered the game in his first relief appearance for the Rascals. He tossed 4.0 frames, surrendering two runs, three hits, and five walks.
Mark Micowski hit a leadoff homerun in the bottom of the first inning. Santiago Chirino then singled, and Patrick McKenna reached on an error. Aaron Dudley followed with an RBI single, and Richard Lucas drove home McKenna on a sacrifice flyout.
RHP Johnny Morales led off the third with a walk and advanced to second on a groundout. After LF Brian Hasen was hit by a pitch, 1B Danny Canela hit a two-out RBI single.
In the bottom of the inning, Dudley singled and scored on Sam Judah's two-out double.
Jim Vahalik hit a solo homer in the fourth inning to extend the Belters lead to 5-1.
In the seventh inning, McKenna and Dudley hit back-to-back doubles, scoring McKenna. Lucas drove home Dudley with a single.
The Rascals scored twice in the ninth. RF Zach Kometani hit a solo shot to open the inning. Morales then walked, and CF Curran Redal singled. LF Josh Silver then hit a sac fly to centerfield that scored Morales from third base.
Normal starter Mike Schweiss (W, 3-5) allowed just one run in 8.0 innings. He allowed four hits and four walks while striking out eight.
RHP Chandler Jagodzinski, RHP Derek Cape, and RHP Marc Rutledge each tossed 1.0 perfect inning of relief. RHP Will Schierholz surrendered two runs on three hits in 1.0 frame.
The Rascals and Florence Freedom open a three-game series on Friday, July 3 at UC Health Stadium at 7:05 p.m. EST.
