Crushers Win on Blunder

July 3, 2015 - Frontier League (FL)
Lake Erie Crushers News Release

AVON, Ohio- The Lake Erie Crushers snuck by the Windy City ThunderBolts, 2-1, in a pitchers dual that ended on a walk-off error committed by T-Bolts third baseman Jacob Tanis, allowing two Crushers to come around to score.

With the victory, the Crushers (16-24), have now won five of their last seven games at All Pro Freight Stadium. The loss for the Thunderbolts (15-26) marks their sixth straight loss and the ninth loss in their last ten games. Windy City is now 2-13 on the road.

In the third inning, Windy City was able to get on the board. The first home run of the season by Larry Balkwill flew over the left field wall and put the ThunderBolts up by one run.

The home run was the only run and hit Brad Zambron would give up in his six innings of work. Zambron also walked two and struck out four. He would not pick up a decision as the Crushers struggled to hit in the clutch again.

Juan Sanchez was stranded at third in the first inning as he singled to lead off the inning. He then moved over to second on a groundout to first and stopped at third on a two out single to right by Anderson Hidalgo. Jose Barraza flew out to left to end the inning. In the fifth, Ty Nelson doubled to lead off the inning but was doubled up at second on a line drive to first by Joey Burney. And then in the seventh, Hidalgo singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a passed ball by catcher Balkwill. He was eventually stranded at third as the Crushers could not come up with a hit.

In the ninth inning, the Crushers were able to scratch across two runs. Austin Prott walked to begin the inning. After Hidalgo struck out and Barraza lined to second on an outstanding diving play by Michael Torres, Nelson came up big. The Crushers right fielder smacked a ground-rule double to left center field to move Prott to third. Burney then grounded to third, on what looked like, a game ending groundout. Tanis' throw to first was wide and went past first baseman Austin Gallagher, allowing Prott and Nelson to score on the walk off error.

Zambron went six innings and allowed a walk in the seventh. The start marked his longest outing of the season. Daniel DeSimone and Mike Devine pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth. Trevor Longfellow (3-2) picked up the win as he pitched a perfect ninth inning. For the Thunderbolts, Travis Tingle (2-5) pitched 8 2/3 allowing six hits and walked two, he also struck out four. Tingle picked up the loss as the two runs came across to score in the ninth, both unearned.

With the single in the first inning, Sanchez now has a seven game hit streak and has reached base safely in nine straight games.

The Crushers continue the homestand with the Windy City ThunderBolts on Saturday night. Lake Erie will start right hander Zach Morton (2-0, 1.05). Windy City will counter with lefty Jake Fisher (1-4, 5.93). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
