Altoona Curve News Release
ALTOONA - The Altoona Curve continued their torrid stretch against the New Britain Rock Cats with another come-from-behind victory, prevailing 10-7 at Blair County Ballpark. In a game that spilled over into the early Thursday morning hours, the Curve scored nine unanswered runs to grab their eighth victory in their last nine opportunities.
After a rain delay of two hours and 19 minutes, the contest finally began at 9:19 p.m. and wasn't finished until 12:21 a.m. The Curve fell behind by the score of 5-1 after starter Derek Hankins allowed three runs over four innings. In relief, Josh Shortslef gave up a pair of runs on five hits over three innings to put Altoona behind the eight-ball.
After the Curve chipped away at the disadvantage with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the deficit 5-3, Altoona erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the eighth.
In that frame, Anthony Webster, who finished the night 4-for-4 with a pair of triples and two RBI capped off the seven run attack with a two-run triple. Webster had two hits in the eighth inning, as the Curve center fielder led off the inning with a single and scored the first run to start the comeback, before his big triple. Sandwiched in between were the five other Curve runs, which were produced via a wild pitch, a Shelby Ford RBI single, a run-producing base-hit by Jonel Pacheco coupled with a two-run single by Jason Delaney. All told, the Curve tallied their most runs (7) and hits (7) in a single inning this year. The outburst put Altoona up 10-5.
A pair of pitchers fell victim to the Curve surge, as Zach Ward (2-1), who allowed only four earned runs all season, was hooked for the loss along with five earned runs in the inning. Ben Julianel came on in relief and was touched up for two runs on three hits in 1/3 of an inning.
Jeff Sues (2-0), who tossed two innings of relief, held the Rock Cats at bay. New Britain scored a pair of runs in a comeback attempt, but Sues was able to hang on for the win which improves the Curve's overall record to 24-32.
The Curve will look for the sweep on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. against New Britain. Lefty Kyle Bloom (0-3, 6.17) will start for Altoona, while southpaw Errol Simonitsch (0-3, 12.18) takes the hill for the Rock Cats.
Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Jeff Reed will be at BCB to throw out a ceremonial first pitch and sign free autographs for fans. Great seats for Thursday's contest are still available and can be obtained over the phone by calling 877-99-CURVE, online at AltoonaCurve.com or in person at the Blair County Ballpark box office.
