Defenders falter late for 3-1 loss

NORWICH, CT- It was a long and arduous night in Norwich on Wednesday night as the Connecticut Defenders fell 3-1 to Trenton in 12 innings.
The Defs cracked the scoreboard initially as Travis Ishikawa blasted a solo homer over the right-center field wall to give the home team a 1-0 advantage.
Trenton didn't fill the score column until the top of the sixth when Edwar Gonzalez hit a frozen rope up the middle with two outs to score Ramiro Pena. The game sat at 1-1 after six.
Five innings of zeroes were traded by both squads as the game drifted into extra innings where the Defs haven't faired well in 2008 (just a 1-3 record).
The relievers for both team tossed well. Anthony Claggett and Mark Melancon combined for five scoreless, scattered just three hits, walked one and struck out two for the Thunder.
During the top of the twelfth the silence was broken. Pena delivered a one-out single, Austin Jackson walked and Colin Curtis tapped a slow roller up the first base line. Ishikawa fielded it cleanly but the covering pitcher in Jason Waddell couldn't handle the ball as it squirted out of his glove. Pena came in to score on the blunder as Jackson moved up to third base. Gonzalez lifted a sac fly to deep right field to score Jackson as the Thunder took a 3-1 lead.
Melancon threw a quick twelfth as Trenton closed the glove on a 3-1 win.
Defender's starting pitcher Garrett Broshuis chucked six and a third innings, allowed one earned run on four hits, walked two and struck out two in the no-decision. The Thunder's starting hurler in George Kontos had a nice outing as well as he lasted seven, gave up one earned run on only three hits, walked two and fanned seven.
Ishikawa's homer in the fourth was his sixth of the season and his second in as many days.
