Altoona Curve News Release
ALTOONA- The Altoona Curve came up on the short end of a 2-1 loss to the Reading Phillies Friday evening at Blair County Ballpark. A strong performance by starter Derek Hankins was in vain as Altoona dropped their overall season mark to 0-2.
The only blemish on the mark of Hankins was a solo home run he surrendered in the top of the second inning to Jeremy Slayden, which gave the R-Phils a 1-0 lead. All told, Hankins went six innings, scattering just four hits and punching out six batters.
Altoona's only run of the game came in the bottom of the third inning off Reading starter Josh Outman. James Boone led off the frame with a walk, which was immediately followed by a Shelby Ford single. The duo both stole second and third base, respectively, with two outs before an infield single by Luis Cruz brought home Boone to deadlock the game at 1-1.
That score held true until the top of the seventh. Dave Davidson (0-1) was the hard-luck loser, falling victim to a two-out double by Slayden, who later scored on a Brad Harman infield single giving Reading a lead which they would not relinquish.
Ron Hill (1-0) notched the win for Reading in relief after pitching one inning of perfect relief.
The Curve return to action at 5:05 p.m. tomorrow night against Reading . Right-hander Yoslan Herrera will make his 2008 debut for Altoona and will be opposed by former Curve hurler, righty Kip Bouknight.
As part of the club's 10th anniversary season-long celebration, the 1999 Curve team will be recognized on the second fireworks night of the series. Former Curve outfielder Kory DeHaan will be at the ballpark to mingle with fans and sign autographs. Great seats are still available and can be obtained by calling 877-99-CURVE, by logging on to AltoonaCurve.com, or in person at the Blair County Ballpark Box Office.
