Aerodynamics...

Opening Day Take Two...The Aeros and Senators battled for nine full innings last night before wet grounds suspended the game prior to the start of extra innings. Akron and Harrisburg will pick up the 5-5 tie in the top of the 10th inning at 5:05 p.m., with Matt Whitney leading off against reliever Eude Brito. Tonight's regularly scheduled game will begin roughly 30 minutes following the final out of the suspended game.

Friendly Fire...You'd be hard-pressed to find an Aeros player who isn't rooting for former teammate and current Senators reliever Jim Ed Warden to have success with his new franchise, but that didn't prevent Akron from straddling the big side-armer with a blown save last night. The Senators had struck for three runs (one earned) in the bottom of the eighth off Akron's Bubbie Buzachero, so Warden entered looking for the final three outs to preserve a slim 5-4 lead. Aeros C Chris Gimenez worked a leadoff walk however, and after a sacrifice from 2B Brandon Chaves Warden walked CF Jose Constanza. The Senators tried to stem the momentum with lefty Eude Brito, but he uncorked a pair of two-out wild pitches to score pinch-runner Nathan Panther with the tying run.

The First Step...Remember yesterday how we highlighted the returns of IFs Michael Aubrey and Matt Whitney from injury? Well, so far so good for the duo. Aubrey got the start at first base for the Aeros and drilled a three-run homer off Harrisburg starter Bobby Brownlie with two away in the top of the fifth, while DH Whitney walked, singled, doubled and scored a run in four trips. Aubrey has battled back and hamstring ailments since 2005 but managed 256 at-bats last season, his most since 2004. Whitney, meanwhile, suffered complications for years from a gruesome leg injury suffered in 2003, but proved his health last year by hitting .299 and mashing 32 home runs and 113 RBI between Lake County and Kinston.

And Then There Was One...The Aeros carry a dozen position players on their roster, and all but IF Chris de la Cruz saw action last night. OF Nathan Panther entered as a pinch-runner in the top of the ninth for starting C Chris Gimenez, and after coming around to score gave way to Armando Camacaro behind the plate for the bottom of the frame.

Did You Know...The Aeros are 11-8 all-time on Opening Day since moving to Canton in 1989, but this is the first time they've played Harrisburg to begin a campaign. This is also only the second time the Aeros have gone to extra innings on Opening Day; they defeated Reading 3-2 in 16 innings in 2004. The 4:53 marathon is still the longest game (both time and innings) in team history. Kenny Rayborn got the win with two hitless innings, and the teams stranded a combined 29 runners.
