Baysox, Spoone Sunk By Erie In Opener, 8-3 In 11 Innings

(Bowie, MD) - Baysox Opening Night had to wait an extra day, as Bowie and Erie took the field for the first time on Friday night. Pasadena, MD native and Orioles # 8 overall prospect, Chorye Spoone, made his Double-A debut and received a warm welcome from the home crowd. Spoone had a bit of a rocky start in his debut, giving up a lead-off single to Freddy Guzman. Guzman then followed that up by swiping second in the next at-bat, moving into scoring position. Two batters later Jeff Frazier scored Guzman with an RBI single, putting Spoone and the Baysox behind, 1-0. Spoone shook off some early nerves to get Wilkin Ramirez out on strikes and Dusty Ryan to ground out ending the inning.

After allowing a lead-off double to Mike Rodriguez and a walk to Nolan Reimold two batters later, Jon Connolly was stellar retiring 17 straight Baysox batters. Connolly next allowed a base runner in the seventh inning.

Spoone continued to struggle after getting out of trouble in the first inning. He allowed 2 more runs in the third inning. Jeff Frazier led off with a home run to center. Spoone retired the next two batters, but Ramirez reached on an infield single up the middle. On the next pitch, Erie had a hit-and-run on, and Dusty Ryan doubled to left. Ramirez scored the third run of the game.

Spoone did an excellent job of getting out of trouble. In 4.2 innings, he allowed 8 hits, 2 BB's and hit a batter, but only allowed three runs. He was relieved by Romero in the fifth inning with 2 outs and 2 runners on. Romero struck out Kody Kirkland to end the inning. Romero pitched 2.1 innings, allowing no hits, walking 2 and striking out 3. He pitched through the top of the seventh inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, Nolan Reimold became the first Baysox to reach safely since he walked back in the first inning. With Reimold on first, catcher Ben Davis hit a line drive to center field. The centerfielder took a bad angle on the ball, and it went to the wall. Reimold scored, and Davis had an RBI triple. It was his first triple since 2002, when he was a member of the Seattle Mariners. Lou Montanez drew a walk and moved to second on a passed ball. After Montanez's walk, Jon Connolly was relieved by Matt Rusch.

With runners on second and third, Jeff Nettles hit a double down the left field line to time the game at 3. He moved to third on Blake Davis's sacrifice bunt, but Ryan Finan popped out and pinch hitter Kennard Jones struck out to end the inning.

Jim Miller relieved Romero to start the eighth inning and he struck out the first 4 batters he faced.

After 9 innings, the score was tied at 3-3. Jim Miller retired the side in order in the top of the 10th, completing 3 shutout innings, allowing 1 hit, 1 BB and striking out 4.

Juan Cedeno relieved Matt Rusch to start the tenth inning. Cedeno pitched 2 shutout innings without allowing a hit. He walked 3 and struck out 2.
