Altoona Curve News Release
READING, PA- Former Curve pitcher Kip Bouknight and closer Patrick Overholt combined on a two-hit shutout as the Reading Phillies handed Altoona its second consecutive shutout loss, 3-0, Friday evening at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading.
Altoona (13-21) was shutout, 1-0, in the final game of their series at Akron on Thursday and will carry a string of 19 straight innings without a run into Saturday's game against Reading. The Curve have not scored a run since the eighth inning of Wednesday's 3-2 loss at Akron.
Bouknight, who posted an 11-6 record in 24 games with the Curve in 2007, tossed seven scoreless innings to earn the win. The right-hander, who was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies as a minor league free agent this past winter, carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before James Boone recorded Altoona's first hit with a one-out single. Milver Reyes added the Curve's only other hit against Bouknight with a two-out double in the seventh.
Bouknight walked two batters and struck out five to even his season record at 3-3. One of the two free passes issued by the 29-year old veteran went to Jason Delaney, who extended his consecutive games on-base streak to 21 games.
Meanwhile, Curve starter Kyle Bloom turned in an impressive starting performance despite being handed his third loss in three decisions. The left-hander worked a season-high five innings and struck out seven batters. The only run he allowed came in the bottom of the fourth, when Greg Golson drilled a long solo home run to left-center field to put Reading up 1-0.
The R-Phils padded their lead in the bottom of the eighth on Jeremy Slayden's two-run single to right off Curve reliever Josh Shortslef. Shortslef, who was making just his third appearance of the season after being added to the Altoona roster last Friday from Pirates' extended spring training, worked the final three innings for the Curve, allowing two runs and three hits.
Overholt entered the game in the eighth inning and completed the shutout with two strong innings, including a 1-2-3 ninth to notch his eight save of the season.
The Curve missed on several opportunities throughout the contest to get on the board, leaving five of their seven stranded base runners in scoring position, including the bases loaded in the sixth.
Altoona will continue its four-game series against the R-Phils Saturday evening at FirstEnergy Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. Altoona will send right-hander Yoslan Herrera (1-3, 3.30) to the mound against Reading righty and Philadelphia Phillies' top pitching prospect Carlos Carrasco (3-2, 3.25). Fans can hear all the action on flagship station Real Oldies 93.5 FM and the Curve Radio Network beginning at 5:50 with the Curve GameDay Show.
