Aerodynamics...
One Love...The Aeros managed only a single run yesterday on the third Roadway Education Day, but C Armando Camacaro's two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the second proved to be just enough as Akron blanked Altoona 1-0. It was the second shutout of the year for the Aeros, with both coming at the expense of the Curve; Akron won 2-0 April 23rd at Blair County Ballpark.
Go-Go Gadget Arm...It was quite a series for Akron RF Ryan Goleski, who was ejected from Tuesday's game for arguing balls and strikes, sat out Wednesday's win, and then found out he would be starting yesterday just 40 minutes before the first pitch when Chris de la Cruz was a late scratch. Goleski made the most of his opportunity however, going 2-3 at the plate and then saving the game in the ninth with two fine plays in the field. Goleski's first gem came with runners at first and second and one out, as Anthony Webster singled to right. It appeared that pinch-runner James Boone would score easily, but Goleski fired a dart to Camacaro at home, and the veteran catcher blocked the plate and absorbed a collision for the second out. Luis Cruz then followed with a well-hit ball to the gap in right-center, but Goleski was there to track it down to end the game.
The Herrmannator...Akron starter Frank Herrmann was locked in yesterday, holding Altoona to just a pair of singles over the course of seven scoreless innings in easily his finest performance of the young season. The former Harvard University standout did not allow a hit over his final four innings, saw only two runners get past first base (with neither getting past second), and retired eight in a row at one point while earning his team-leading fourth win of the year.
Singles Mixer...Akron and Altoona combined for 12 hits yesterday, and not a single one went for extra-bases. The Aeros managed only five extra-base hits in 33 innings against Curve pitching in the series, while Altoona had nine in 36 innings.
High Quality...Akron's starting pitching was phenomenal against Altoona, with starters Kevin Dixon, Chuck Lofgren, David Huff and Herrmann turning in a quality start in all four games. Dixon held the Curve to three runs in six innings Monday night, Lofgren and Huff both allowed just a run in seven innings, and Herrmann has his seven scoreless frames yesterday. Combined, the quartet limited Altoona to just five runs and 17 hits in 27 innings (a 1.67 ERA), while also racking up 25 strikeouts and issuing only eight walks. All five Aeros starters have at least two quality starts this year, with Huff and Herrmann tied for the team lead with three each.
Did You Know...The Aeros are bidding for their first three-game winning streak of the season tonight.
