Salt lake City—The Angels announced Saturday that outfielder Curtis Pride has signed with the club and will join the Stingers' roster. Pride, 35, made history by becoming the first full-season deaf player in the modern era of major league baseball in 1996 with the Detroit Tigers. Pride is in his 19th professional season and has compiled a .253 (296/718) average in 353 major league games with 19 home runs and 28 stolen bases. Pride has played for the Mets, Expos, Braves, Tigers, Red Sox, Dodgers, Pirates and Yankees' organizations in his career. Pride's foundation, Together with Pride (www.togetherwithpride.org) was founded to support and create programs for hearing impaired children that focus on the importance of education and the learning of life skills along with promoting a positive self esteem. Last season, Pride went 1-for-12 in four games with the Yankees, his only hit being a solo home run in front of a sold-out Yankee Stadium on July 6, 2003. So far this season, Pride was batting .446 (29/65) with one home run, nine doubles, 12 RBI and 12 runs scored in 17 games with the independent Nashua Pride of the Atlantic League.

To make room for Pride on the roster, OF Barry Wesson was placed on the disabled list on 5/28 with a left hamstring pull. Wesson is expected to miss four weeks of action. Also, RHP Steve Andrade was transferred from Salt Lake to double-A Arkansas effective today.
