Portland Beavers News Release

TUCSON, Ariz. - Julio Ramirez tripled and scored three runs and Jim Parque earned his second win as the Tucson Sidewinders defeated the Portland Beavers 4-2 Friday night at Tucson Electric Park.

Tucson's Noochie Varner had three hits and former Beaver Brandon Villafuerte pitched the final 1.1 innings for his second save of the season.

Despite striking out a season-high 10 batters in 5.0 innings, Portland starter Steve Watkins suffered the loss in his first appearance with the Beavers this season. Watkins (0-1) gave up three runs on six hits and three walks as the Beavers dropped their second game in a row.

Parque (2-1) gave up both runs and allowed seven hits in 6.0 innings on the mound.

Yamid Haad accounted for all of Portland's offense with a two-run home run that gave the Beavers (22-27) a 2-0 lead in the second inning.

Tucson (28-20) countered in the bottom of the inning, cutting that lead in half when Varner's single through the left side scored Ramirez.

Tim Olson doubled home Juan Brito in the third to tie the game, and the Sidewinders took the lead for good in the fourth as Ramirez scored on an RBI single by Jerry Gil.

Ramirez scored on a two-out single by Keoni DeRenne in the bottom of the eighth to cap the scoring.

Haad and Alex Fernandez each had two hits for Portland. Freddy Guzman, who was transferred to Portland from Class AA Mobile on Friday, singled, walked and swiped his 18th base of the season in his 2004 Portland debut.

NOTES: Beavers outfielder Jon Knott had his contract purchased by the San Diego Padres on Friday. Knott joined the Padres in Milwaukee but did not play in their 5-3 win over the Brewers ... first baseman Tagg Bozied was activated from the disabled list earlier in the day. He was 0-for-4 in his return after missing 37 games with a hamstring injury ... Watkins, who was transferred to the Beavers from Class AA Mobile on Thursday, doubled in his first at-bat of the season with Portland. Watkins has 24 strikeouts over his last three starts ... three Beavers pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts ... Portland left 10 men on base ... the Beavers are now 15-6 when scoring first ... Tucson leads the season series with Portland, 6-3.
