Iowa Cubs News Release

Steve Clevenger delivered a game-winning walk-off single for the Iowa Cubs (50-65) as they came from behind to defeat the Fresno Grizzlies (51-64) 3-2 Saturday night at Principal Park. The Cubs took three of four games in the series from the Grizzlies. Tonight's victory was the 3,000th Triple-A franchise win.

Trailing 2-1 entering the home half of the ninth, DJ LeMahieu reached base with a walk to lead off the inning. Brad Snyder followed by laying down a sacrifice bunt that was mishandled by Fresno first baseman Brett Pill and Snyder reached safely. Bryan LaHair drew a walk to load the bases for Iowa with no outs. Scott Moore drove in LeMahieu to tie the game with a sac fly while Snyder and LaHair advanced bases as well. Matt Spencer was issued an intentional walk to once again load the bases to bring the pinch-hitter Clevenger to the plate. Down 0-2 in the count, Clevenger sent a ground ball through the drawn in infield to score Snyder and give the Cubs the victory.

Prior to the final inning, the Iowa offense had been held to just two hits. Starting pitcher Felix Romero pitched five innings and allowed both Cub hits. He walked two and struck out six. He allowed one run, but did not factor in the decision.

Waldis Joaquin pitched two perfect innings for the Grizzlies and struck out four batters. Dan Otero added a scoreless inning as well for Fresno. Marc Kroon (2-5) was charged with his fourth blown save of the season and the loss. He only recorded one out and gave up one hit, three walks and two runs.

Cubs' starter Casey Coleman pitched seven innings and scattered seven hits. He allowed two runs, walked one and struck out three. He did not factor in the decision but gave Iowa a quality start.

Justin Berg (4-1) pitched the final two innings of the game for Iowa and picked up the win. He walked one and struck out two Grizzlies.

Fresno scored both of its runs when they produced back-to-back home runs, the unconventional way. In the fifth inning, Conor Gillaspie lined a ball down the right field line that settled under the Grizzlies' bullpen bench. Spencer, who was starting in his first Triple-A game for the Cubs in right field, let the ball lay while he waited for the umpire to declare a ground-rule double. As Gillaspie rounded the bases, the call from the umpire did not come and Gillaspie was credited with an inside-the-park home run. Bill Hall followed with a deep blast to left-center field for a solo homer to put the Grizzlies up 2-0.

The Cubs responded in the bottom of the fifth when Coleman produced an RBI-single to drive in Moore who had walked to lead off the frame.

The Sacramento River Cats come to town tomorrow afternoon to open a four-game set against the Cubs. The River Cats will send Travis Banwart (6-7, 5.14) to the mound opposite Dave Bush (0-2, 7.41) for the Cubs.
