Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

South Bend, IN - South Bend scores six times on 14 hits Tuesday night to take the series opener over Cedar Rapids 6-3, snapping the Kernels' four-game winning streak.

After never trailing in the final three games of the series against Wisconsin, Cedar Rapids again hopped on the board first to open the series in South Bend. With two outs in the top of the third inning, Misael Urbina crushed his first home run since the end of June, well over the wall in left field, to give the Kernels a 1-0 lead.

But the Cedar Rapids edge would not last long. In the bottom of the fourth inning, a walk and a double put two in scoring position for Ed Howard, who lifted South Bend ahead for the first and final time at 2-1 with a two-run single.

In the bottom of the fifth, a pair of hits put runners on the corners for Ezequiel Pagan, who added to the South Bend lead with a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-1 game.

In the sixth inning, again South Bend padded the lead. Two singles and a fielder's choice put two on the bases again for Howard, who picked his third RBI on this third hit of the night, an RBI single to put the Cubs up by three at 4-1.

In the last of the seventh, back-to-back hits opened the frame putting two on for James Triantos, who produced a run with an RBI double. Two batter's later, Moises Ballesteros picked up an RBI with his third hit of the night, a single to open up a five-run Cubs lead at 6-1.

In the top of the eighth inning, the Kernels started to fight back. Two walks and a single loaded the bases for Noah Miller, who got Cedar Rapids back on the board with a sacrifice fly. The next batter, Emmanuel Rodriguez, then ripped a single to re-load the bases for Kala'i Rosario with two outs. But Sheldon Reed, on the mound for South Bend, picked up a strikeout to leave the bases full.

In the top of the ninth inning, Jorel Ortega got the Kernels one run closer with an RBI double to make it a 6-3 game, but that was as closest Cedar Rapids would get in the 6-3 series-opening loss.

The defeat for the Kernels (71-44) snaps the Cedar Rapids four-game winning streak, as South Bend (50-63) takes the series opener at Four Winds Field. Game two of the set is scheduled for Wednesday at 6:05, with Andrew Morris on the mound against Connor Noland.
