Cubs Keep Playoff Hopes Alive in 5-4 Win over Hot Rods

South Bend Cubs News Release

South Bend, IN: The South Bend Cubs survived a late 9th inning rally by the Bowling Green Hot Rods and closed out a 5-4 series opening win from Four Winds Field on Tuesday night. In the win, Tyler Durna picked up two extra base hits and Brennen Davis hit his second home run in three games.

The clubhouse knew coming into this week that it is do or die for their playoff hopes after dropping two out of three in Dayton. With starter Peyton Remy on the mound, the Cubs got another quality start from the crafty righty in five innings of two run baseball. Just one run was earned for the newest South Bend starter.

After Remy exited with the lead, left-hander Jack Patterson received even more run support from the invigorating lineup as Davis stepped up to the plate. After hitting his first professional home run on Saturday in Dayton, Davis hit a no-doubter into the home run porch beyond left field to score two more. It was a 5-2 South Bend lead after six innings.

Patterson cruised through three innings of shutout baseball and added two strikeouts. As the game headed for the 9th, trusty right-hander Jeff Passantino got the call from the bullpen. After getting one out in the 9th, Bowling Green put two runners in scoring position off of Passantino. With one run in, and as Passantino began to near his pitch maximum for the inning, Buddy Bailey made the decision to go to his closer.

Ethan Roberts entered with an out in the 9th and shut the door the rest of the way. One more run charged to Passantino came across, but Roberts struck out Beau Brundage to end the game and South Bend celebrated with their 31st win of the season.

With the victory, the Cubs improved their already claimed best home Midwest League record to 21-7. They will look to take game two and continue their playoff push tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. as lefty Faustino Carrera will be the starting pitcher.
