Lake County Captains News Release

(Fort Wayne, IN) - The Lake County Captains (34-23) let a 3-0 lead slip away and lost the opener of a three-game series against the Fort Wayne TinCaps (27-29). Fort Wayne came from behind to beat Lake County on Tuesday night at Parkview Field, 4-3.

TinCaps starter Gabe Mosser held the Captains to just one hit the first time through the order, but Lake County broke through when the lineup turned over in the fourth. Mosser hit Tyler Freeman with a pitch to put the Captains' shortstop on first with one out and Ruben Cardenas followed with a single Will Benson came up next and slammed a line drive off the angled wall in the right field corner. The ball ricocheted all the way to right-centerfield, allowing both Freeman and Cardenas to score. Benson cruised to third with a two-run triple to give the Captains a 2-0 lead.

Benson struck again in the sixth. Jose Fermin reached on an error by third baseman Kelvin Melean to begin the frame and then stole second base. With two outs, Benson hit a grounder to first that took a nasty hop over first baseman Lee Solomon and bounded into right field for an RBI single. Fermin scored to extend the Captains' lead to 3-0. Benson drove in all three Captains runs in Tuesday's ballgame.

Captains starter Luis Oviedo coasted through five dominant innings before allowing a pair of runs in the sixth. Over the first five frames, Oviedo held Fort Wayne scoreless on two hits. He struck out three and walked one. In the sixth, however, Oviedo walked Aldemar Burgos with one out and Justin Lopez cracked a double to right field that plated Burgos. Blake Hunt came up next and ripped a triple to right that scored Lopez and cut the Captains' lead to 3-2. Oviedo then stranded Hunt on third by striking out Agustin Ruiz to maintain the lead.

Lake County right-hander Aaron Pinto struck out the side in the seventh, but Fort Wayne took the lead in the eighth against another righty reliever, Kyle Marman. Marman hit Jawuan Harris with a pitch to begin the inning and the runner moved to second on a ground out by Xavier Edwards. Burgos came up next and pulled a single into left field that scored Burgos with the tying run.

Hunt nearly gave Fort Wayne the lead when he ripped a liner off the left-centerfield wall, but as the ball caromed past Benson, Quentin Holmes adeptly backed up the play. He fired the ball in quickly and forced Burgos, who started the play on second, to advance only as far as third. With the bases loaded, however, Ruiz hit a sacrifice fly to left field and Burgos scored to give the TinCaps a 4-3 lead.

TinCaps reliever Austin Smith nailed down the game for Fort Wayne with a one-two-three ninth inning, en route to his second save of the year. Jose Quezada earned the win in relief. Quezada (4-1) pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless and hitless baseball with one strikeout and no walks.

Marman (0-1) suffered a blown save and the loss. The right-hander only pitched the eighth and allowed two runs on two hits with two walks, one hit batter and no strikeouts.

The Captains and TinCaps play game two of their three-game series on Wednesday night. First pitch at Parkview Field is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
