Eugene Emeralds News Release
EUGENE, OR - A frustrating night on the diamond was overshadowed by a beautiful celebration off the diamond as the Eugene Emeralds (28-17) fell to the Vancouver Canadians (26-20) by a final of 9-1 on PRIDE Night at PK Park.
THE DETAILS:
Winning Pitcher: Luis Quinones (2-2, 2.38 ERA): 5.0 IP | 2 H | 1 R | 1 ER | 5 BB | 10 K
Losing Pitcher: Aaron Phillips (2-4, 5.76 ERA): 6.1 IP | 6 H | 5 R | 5 ER | 3 BB | 4 K
Save: N/A
HR(s): Eugene: N/A | Vancouver: Ronny Brito (4), Luis De Los Santos (5)
HOW IT HAPPENED: After a mundane first two innings of play, Vancouver opened the scoring in the third when Eric Rivera, who was the only Canadians position player to not collect a hit the night prior, led off the third inning with a double to right field. Two batters later, after groundouts from DJ Neal and Luis De Los Santos, Tanner Morris singled to center field, scoring Rivera from second and putting the visitors up first, 1-0.
A scary scene unfolded minutes later in the bottom half of the inning when Brandon Martorano, fresh off a 4-for-4 performance at the plate on Thursday, was hit in the head by a pitch from Vancouver's Luis Quinones. Martorano, who crumped to the ground initially after being hit, was fortunately able to come to his feet and exit the game under his own power, bringing Robert Emery into the game as his replacement.
In the fourth, the C's added to their lead when Spencer Horwitz led off the inning by drawing a four-pitch walk, advanced to second on a Sebastian Espino sac bunt, and then took a slow trot all the way home thanks to a two-run bomb from Ronny Brito, his fourth four-bagger of the season, extending Vancouver's lead to 3-0.
Eugene stuck back and got on the board in the bottom half of the inning. Armani Smith led off the frame with a walk on a full count, and he was followed by Logan Wyatt who singled on the first pitch he saw to put runners on second and first. After a Tyler Fitzgerald flyout allowed Smith to tag and advanced to third, Franklin Labour stepped up and smacked a towering blast to center field, but it came up just short of clearing the wall and resulted in a mere RBI sac fly, scoring Smith to make it 3-1.
That run proved to be the only time the Emeralds would put a tally on the scoreboard, though, as the C's kicked it into cruise control the rest of the way.
Two more runs in the seventh behind a DJ Neal RBI double and a Cameron Eden RBI single made it 5-1 in favor of the C's, and it became 8-1 two innings later when Luis De Los Santos teed off for his fifth homer of the season, a three-run blast to center.
Vancouver added one more for good measure in the ninth behind a Ronny Brito RBI double, capping a lack-luster night for the Emeralds who were handed their second straight defeat after seeing their eight-game winning streak snapped just twenty-four hours prior.
PEAK PERFORMERS:
Robert Emery - C: Though the San Francisco native entered under what were obviously unfortunate circumstances, the man known as Bobby Knocks made the most of his opportunity, going 2-for-3 at the plate while also throwing out a would-be base stealer.
WHAT'S NEXT: The Eugene Emeralds and Vancouver Canadians face off again on Saturday night. Saturday night is Firefighter Appreciation at PK Park. First pitch between the Ems and C's is scheduled for 7:05pm PST at PK Park.
