C's dig a hole too deep in 5-3 loss to Ems
July 31, 2018 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Vancouver Canadians News Release
(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, B.C.) - Canadians starter Elio Silva gave up five runs over his six innings of work while Emeralds reliever Faustino Carrera went six innings of one-run baseball to help pace Eugene to a 5-3 victory on Monday night in front of a sun-soaked, sold out crowd at Scotiabank Field.
Silva (2-2) struggled on the mound falling behind most of the hitters he faced over his first two innings of work, allowing a pair of runs in the top of the 1st and 2nd innings. Grant Fennell hit his 1st home run of the summer off Silva in the top of the 2nd inning to give the Ems a 4-1 lead.
Vancouver would hang around in this one as trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the 5th inning Canadians second baseman Sterling Guzman hit his 2nd home run of the season over the left field fence off Carrera to bring the C's to within a pair of runs. Carrera and closer Casey Ryan would not be denied in the bottom of the 9th inning as Carrera was finally lifted from with the game with runners on first and second base for the Canadians with no one out and Nick Podkul stepping into the box. Emeralds manager Steve Lerud summoned Ryan from the bullpen and he proceeded to get Podkul to ground into a double play and followed that up by getting Jake Brodt to ground out to short to end the game.
With the loss, Vancouver falls to 4-3 (.571) on the second half and remain tied for top spot in the North Division alongside Spokane who fell 8-6 to Hillsboro out at Avista Stadium.
Vancouver wraps up this five-game series on Tuesday, July 31st at 7:05pm as RHP Joey Murray(0-0, 0.00) gets the ball opposite RHP Zach Mort (0-0, 2.70) with the Canadians hoping to finish this series 4-1 (.800).
