Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio - The Lake Erie Crushers were held to just two hits over the first five innings of Friday night's contest at All Pro Freight Stadium, but scored six times on six hits in the sixth inning to pull away with an 8-2 victory over the Evansville Otters.
The win for the Crushers (31-25) was their fourth in a row, and gives them a third consecutive series victory in the second half, while the loss for the Otters (23-33) was their fourth straight.
Evansville got on the board first for the second night in a row. The Otters snapped a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning. Greg Fontenot stroked a one out single and came home moments later on Luis Parache's triple.
Lake Erie answered with a huge sixth inning. The Crushers sent 11 to the plate, and scored six times on six hits. Wally Correa began the inning with a double, and Robby Kuzdale walked, before Brandon Decker struck out. Jason Taylor, Russ Moldenhauer and Andrew Davis followed with three consecutive run scoring singles. Daniel Bowman then belted a two-run base hit, and scored the final run of the inning on Matt Sheely's error in center. Adrian Ortiz smashed a single to center, which got by Sheely, and allowed Bowman to score from first.
The Crushers added to their lead in the eighth inning, when they scored twice with two outs. Davis's single started the inning, and he scored on Brian Erie's triple to right. Correa followed with a walk and Erie scored on Kuzdale's single to left.
Evansville plated one final run in the ninth inning, but it was too little, too late. DeAngelo Mack led off with a double to the gap in left center field, and scored the game's final run on Sheely's two out single.
Lake Erie registered 13 hits on the evening, marking their third straight game with double digits in the hit column.
Eric Gonzalez-Diaz (5-5) scored the victory for the Crushers. He allowed just a run on five hits, while fanning two over six strong innings. Mickey Jannis (4) scored the save, after allowing just a run on four hits while striking out six in three innings of relief. Matt Zielinski (4-5) took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits over 5.1 innings.
All nine in the Lake Erie lineup hit safely at least once. Davis paced the Crushers with three hits, going 3-for-4 with a trio of singles, a run scored and an RBI. Taylor and Erie also hit safely multiple times, recording two hits each. Taylor went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Erie did the same, and has knocked in five runs this series. The Crushers have scored 26 runs on 37 hits over their last three games.
The Crushers will finish their three game series with the Evansville Otters at All Pro Freight Stadium on Saturday night. Right hander Alex Loftin (3-1, 4.45) will start for the Crushers, and the Otters will counter with right hander Bryce Morrow (5-4, 4.29). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
