Friday, July 20 - 7:05 p.m. CT

Silver Cross Field - Joliet, IL

Game #56 - Home Game #32 (23-32), (11-20)

RHP #30 Jacob Sanchez (2-0, 2.13 ERA) vs. RHP #8 Dustin Williams (8-2, 4.54 ERA)

Last time out.

The Slammers fell to the Windy City ThunderBolts 5-1 last night. After five scoreless innings, Steven Maxwell started to struggle for Joliet, issuing three straight singles to Windy City before Brandon Decker knocked a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to make it 1-0. Bob Glover then cleared the bases on a two-RBI double. The ThunderBolts tacked on two more in the eighth. Chad Cregar hit a solo homer, his 16th of the season, before Glover added another on a run scoring single, giving the game a 5-0 tally. The Slammers broke the shutout in the bottom of the ninth when Abel Nieves sent a solo home run sailing over the right field wall, putting the final at 5-1. Steven Maxwell was brilliant for Joliet through the first five, but ended up surrendering three runs on seven hits through five and two-thirds before being replaced by Chase Doremus, Geoff Brown, and Dustin Quattrocchi.

For Starters.

Jacob Sanchez has won his first two starts as a professional. In his most recent outing he went six innings, giving up three runs on six hits in a 6-5 win for the Joliet Slammers on July 15 against the Normal CornBelters. Sanchez was the Midwest Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2012. Sanchez finished the 2012 Iowa Wesleyan season with a 10-2 record and a 2.42 earned run average, including 111 strikeouts, 12 walks, 71 hits allowed and 28 runs allowed (25 earned) in 93 innings pitched. He led the MCC in strikeouts and innings pitched, was second in wins and third in earned run average and opponents' batting average (.208). Sanchez obliterated the Iowa Wesleyan single season strikeout record, becoming the first player in school history to go over 100 K's in a season, and also tied the school record for wins in a season. He also was a recipient of a Gold Glove award with one error in 29 chances in the field.

Rock Bottom?

The Slammers are a season high 10.5 games out of first place and are nine games under .500, matching the most they've been under .500 this year.

Falling behind early.

The opponent has scored first against the Slammers 37 times this season. Joliet is 11-26 when that happens. The Slammers are 12-6 when they score first.

Windy City Woes.

The Slammers went 4-8 last season against the Windy City ThunderBolts and they are 2-5 so far in 2012 against their rivals from Crestwood.

Netzel doing work.

Shortstop Brad Netzel has started to really pick up the pace at the plate this season. He has three multi-hit games over the past five contests with six RBI during that time frame.

Some relief.

After a rough June (5.74 ERA), the Joliet bullpen has bounced back in July as they currently sport an ERA of 3.61 this month. Overall on the season the Slammers' bullpen has an ERA of 4.32.

More walks than strike outs.

All-Star starter Abel Nieves is the only Slammer with more walks (30) than strike outs (20).

Lis on fire in July.

DH and Hitting Coach Erik Lis is hitting .377 so far this July, tops on the team. Lis is still looking to find his power as his four home runs this year are well short of his 20 home run pace from last season.

Error indicator.

The Slammers are 7-26 in games when they make an error. They are 16-6 in games when they do not.

Out-hit.

When the Slammers out-hit an opponent they are 17-7, but when the opponent out-hits the Slammers Joliet has a record of 3-23.
