Crushers use long ball to go up early, but Miners storm back after sixth inning

Marion, Illinois-The Lake Erie Crushers fall to the Southern Illinois Miners, 3-2 while the Crushers took a 2-0 lead on a Jose Barraza two run home run, the Miners were able to get their first hit and first runs in the seventh and win the game in the ninth inning.

With the loss, the Crushers (35-50) have now lost seven straight and fall to 2-6 in the season series with the Miners. The Miners (58-28) have won six straight games and have eight walk off wins this season, three of which have come against the Crushers.

In the first inning, the Crushers took an early lead. Juan Sanchez led off the game on a four pitch walk. With one out, Barraza then hit his fifth home run of the season to right field and give the Crushers a 2-0 lead.

Crushers' starter Brad Zambron had a no-hitter through six innings. He had only walked two hitters before the seventh inning. In the seventh, Michael Earley led off with a single to left and broke up the no-hitter but was out at second on a fielder's choice hit by Frank Martinez. With Martinez on first base, Niko Vasquez hit his second home run of the series to left field to tie the game at two.

The Crushers had a chance to regain the lead in the eighth inning when Cody Stevens singled to left to lead off the inning. Sanchez then walked to put runners on first and second with no outs. Miners' pitcher Evan Mott was then able to get Mark Fowler to fly out to shallow right, Barraza to pop up to second and Anderson Hidalgo to strike out looking to end the inning.

Southern Illinois went to work in the bottom of the ninth as Vasquez hit a one out ground rule double to right center field. Jerrud Sabourin flew out to center but with two outs, Steve Marino singled to center and Vasquez came around to score the winning run.

The starting pitchers were outstanding, as Zambron went 6 2/3 innings allowing two earned runs and two hits and struck out four. Trevor Longfellow (5-8) pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up two hits, a run and was saddled with the loss.

Tim Flight started for the Miners and went seven innings giving up only two runs on two hits and walked four. Evan Mott pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Eric Green (7-3) pitched the top of the ninth inning and picked up the win.

The Crushers and Miners will wrap up this series tomorrow at Rent One Park. The Crushers will start left hander Todd Kibby (1-2, 3.42) and Southern Illinois will go with right hander Jarrett Miller (5-3, 3.61). First pitch is scheduled for 8:05.
