Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. (August 27, 2015) - The Southern Illinois Miners got an outstanding start from Jarett Miller, with the right-hander pitching eight strong innings, but the Crushers were able to rally back from an early deficit to win it in the tenth on a two-out single by Mark Fowler 3-2, denying the Miners a sweep and snapping the team's six-game winning streak.
The Miners gave Miller an immediate lead with three straight singles in the first, including an RBI single by Frank Martinez and a hit by Michael Earley, who extended his hitting streak to 14 games in a row helping the Miners to the 1-0 advantage. After a Jerrud Sabourin leadoff single, one of three hits the Miners first baseman had on the game, Brian Portelli shot a deep double to left-center to plate him for a 2-0 Miners lead.
Miller was outstanding for the Miners on the mound, as he held the Crushers off the board for the first six frames. The only runs he gave up, however, came in the seventh inning. Jose Barraza led off with a double and after a grounder to third held the runner at second base, Juan Sanchez lifted a sinking line drive into center field. Aaron Gates came in on the play and tried to make a sliding catch but could not as the ball rolled by him all the way to the center field fence, resulting in a game-tying, inside-the-park home run to make it 2-2.
Miller ended up pitching eight innings in the contest allowing just one hit and one walk other than the two runs that scored on that play, striking out eight batters to almost completely keep the Crushers at bay. Neither team was able to generate much until the tenth inning, when two walks and a stolen base set the table for Fowler who, with two outs, hit what ended up being the winning single into right field for a 3-2 Crushers lead. The Miners got the tying run on base in the bottom of the inning but were unable to score in suffering the tough defeat.
Southern Illinois could not lower their magic number to clinch a division title with their loss and Traverse City's win on Thursday, setting up a big weekend series for the Miners against the Beach Bums beginning on Friday night at Rent One Park. Miguel Ramirez will get the ball for Southern Illinois against Traverse City's Michael Shreves.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2014 Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
